Do we need to do something about the danger of cars?

So cars are the leading cause of death in the united states and it makes me wonder. Why do people not want to change this situation? I understand that cars are necessary to our daily lives but if that many people are dying because of cars surely there could be a better way? Even if it was just more training for young drivers. They are one of the leading causes of accidents. And driving practice in schools has been canceled for a while now. How does that make sense? What do you think? Does something need to be done about this?
