Mine is..father, mother, siblings, spouses, and children...1st priority Second level father's brothers their wives and children and similarly fathers sisters and their husbands and children. Likewise, mother's brothers their wives and children and similarly mothers sisters, their spouses and children. Mothers parents, fathers parents. - 2nd level. Beyond that I don't consider as family. I am sorry but they are distant relatives. I wouldn't travel for them. What about you?

I will be honest and people may dislike me for this. Wife for me. Everyone else can wait. Next in line, my brother (the only sibling I have), his son. Then Parents.

@fufurinha ...well, that is actually a relief! lol. As long as you understand I am only teasing you for fun nothing serious...that in itself is a huge bond between us. :) You are my Thumbelina here, and Saphrina was our Goldilocks.

For me family wife/husband, parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents and the children and the spouses of brother and sisters. I consider all the others distant family.

@Hatley ..I like that..there has to be a cut off point. Otherwise we are wasting too much gas traveling and too much money gifting and receiving gifts we don't need or want. lol

You hit the nail on its head. "Behave". When they "behave" like sponges they need to go out of that circle called family. lol. But your definition is indeed smaller than mine. :) I went the companies act way..lol

@Rationalwriter ..yeah...I agree. :) I think in India we need a serious look at those laws so that this concept is broken down. And is to his own. That way, we will know for sure if affections are genuine or not. In any event, would you attend any functions of those who "behave" like family?

@vandana7 Haha!! It's all based on experience!! I have seen people in the immediate family act out as if they are gods, and to such people I say bye bye!!!

The only difference from my definition is in the case of more distant relatives with whom I might have strong ties with.

I agree. Sometimes distant relatives are better than not so distant relatives. :)

@Hatley That is so nice that your cousin keeps in touch. It can mean a great deal and I'm sure it does.

@vandana7 I think so too. Sometimes petty jealousies and family squabbles arise between the immediate family members.

My parents and my siblings... done. Even the spouses of siblings and... they don't like it, lol... their children are not permitted in my defined circle. Didn't really have an interaction with grandparents...but they could permeate in my first level... not the uncles and aunts though. At times I am too closed in for my parents and siblings too.... Addendum: Gulp! How could I forget my lovely spouse and cutie children!

lol...I like your definition. In fact, I think laws should confine definition to that. A lot of crimes will come down for sure. :)

I think I include Grandparents to grandchildren and all cousins who are first or second, but even nieces and nephews might not be close enough for me to travel to see. It depends on how close you are.

here it can extend to godparents (ninong, ninang) at baptisms and weddings. extended families can be a help and a hindrance.

@vandana7 then there's kumpare and kumare. let's say a common friend asked you, me and several others to be godparents of their newborn child that will be baptized. we are now kumare, the males are our kumpare. i just don't know how it's translated in english.

@hereandthere ..I like ninong and ninang better. :) They sound musical even when I read. :) I think there were reasons for god parents to be there. In case of calamities when family was not around there would be somebody else to help the children up on their feet. Not sure it is needed anymore. But ninong and ninang is truly good..there was a small child on YouTube singing some song...reminded me of that. :)
