New Alternate Online Income Site Review: CrowdSource.com

Just stumbled upon this site the other day. If you're familiar with the low paying mind-numbing micro work of Amazon mTurk, it sounds like this may be similar. Based on user reviews posted on the job review site, Glass Door, there's the potential for diligent users to earn more. But it does require for many of the higher earning tasks that you have an excellent command of the English language. Most of the reviewers say it's best as side income to pay the bills if needed as most tasks are time consuming and require effort. As an hourly wage, it may not be the best paying gig. From what I can tell, it's a legitimate site with tasks "ranging from writing and editing to tagging and moderation". You do need to take time to qualify for certain tasks. To figure out if you're up for the tasks at hand they have testing they call courses. They do this with a very friendly user interface. If you're someone that likes those Reader's Digest type word quizzes then even though you don't get paid to take the tests, they're kind of fun. Think of it like a skills test during a job interview. MY REVIEW OF CROWDSOURCE.COM 1) GETTING TESTED. IS YOUR ENGLISH GOOD ENOUGH TO PLAY? You have to prequalify with a test of basic U.S. English language before they let you do any writing work. Last night I took a timed test for a "Quality Assurance Specialist" which was basically checking if I could spot basic grammar, word use and punctuation. I think the test said it would take 40 minutes or so but I was able to complete it in about half the time. Breezed through and passed. Yay. Then I was allowed to do some basic, boring web fact checking on Yahoo.com. There's $.30 sitting in the dashboard pending. I'm assuming it's awaiting an editor or client's approval before I get paid. 2) THE WRITING TEST. FAILED. I then tried the test for the junior copywriter tasks which would then allow me to test out for any audio transcription or copywriter opportunities. By now it was 1 a.m. and I thought I could breeze through this timed test as well. My hubris did me in. I scored 75% on a U.S. Basic English Test which ran through "punctuation, sentence structure, pronouns, articles, prepositional phrases, adjectives and adverbs, verbs and verb tenses and word order." You need 80% to qualify. I know that I was taking guesses when it came to "indirect speech." But like taking the SATs, the good folks at CrowdSource are letting me re-take the test in a couple of days. I get two more tries before they deem me unqualified to do the work. Next time, I'm going to take more time and look up stuff on the internet if I have any inkling of being unsure. 3) RECOMMENDATION This appears to be a legitimate, low paying, work at home earning opportunity. It is best suited to native English speakers or individuals with a strong command of the English language. 4) YOUR HELP NEEDED I'm going away for the next week but when I get back, I plan to play around more on the site. I'd love it if some myLotters could check out the site as well, go kick the tires and share their experiences with the community. This way we can all share if the site is a good earning opportunity or a hamster mill. It would be great to help one another to figure out the ins and outs of how it works so we can all shortcut our way to success. Let me know what you think. Have you heard about the site? Are you someone that already writes or edits for CrowdSource. Share what you find out in a myLot post. And feel free to private message me or suggest your post to me so I can come see what you found out. Who's up for trying something new? All right, count me in. I can't guarantee I'll be able to get much done since my internet connection isn't fantastic right now, but I'll give it a fair shot. I like using Mturk (with a lot of help from /r/HITsWorthTurkingFor) for a bit of extra cash, so it sounds like something I'd enjoy.

It seems you have to have pretty fast internet connection 'cause the tests are timed and the work is timed as well. I haven't tried Mturk for years. So I'll have to check it out again.

@AdrienneJenkins Speed isn't an issue, but my home DSL connection is down at the moment. I'm using my tablet as a hotspot to connect my PC on Verizon's network, and I have a really limited amount of data available compared to my normally unlimited connection.

I've heard of Amazon Mturk's, since they're there at my other website I'm a member at in Hub Pages. As for this website, it does sound interesting. Hope you have a nice week ahead of you.

You can do Amazon mTurks through Hub Pages?

@AdrienneJenkins I'm a little confused with that, too... I thought they only had affiliate programs enabled there.

@AdrienneJenkins Well, there's people who can sign up to do Amazon MTurk at Hub Pages and get paid. They let you know if your hubs are spammy, need to fix grammar, etc. I know most of the admin are MTurk workers. I've heard about it there.

@AdrienneJenkins Thanks for including the link. Helium is closed now (need to update :) - Writing for CrowdSource is often tedious though you do get to pick what you write about. They are very picky and edit heavily. But they always pay for what they accept and quickly. Textbroker is very similar though there you can work directly for clients. HubPages is the best but not if you want quick money.

@suziecat7 Thanks for confirming that this is a legitimate, paying site. I see on your blog that you've also written for hubpages, helium, triond and textbroker. How does crowdsource.com compare to all those other earning sites and what would you recommend to people who used to write on Squidoo and Bubblews, which one to try first?
If you have writing skills at all, you can make some extra money writing online . You don't have to be a college english major. If you possess basic spelling and grammar abilities (there's always...

@suziecat7 Great overview. CrowdSource then reminds me of the old Associated Content. I used to enjoy that site. You'd have to write X amount of words and then you'd get paid $3-$5. The more you wrote, the higher paying assignments would come your way. However, over time, fewer opportunities were available. I've got Squidoo lenses that got automatically converted to hubs but I never did anything with them because I didn't quite know about how hubs worked. I figured it might be better to start making the leap to creating my own product related websites vs. starting at Hub Pages. But I continue to flip flop and then not end up publishing anything. So I'm looking for the right combination of writing vehicles to start getting regular income back in.

I have done CrowdSource work and have been recruited by them many times asking me to join their site. I have an excellent rating, so they keep offering me membership based on my task completion ratings. I am not sure whether or not I would have to take and pass any tests, since they are inviting me to join. As for the work, some of the tasks are worth it, but many of them have not been worth it lately. It depends. I have done different sorts of tasks for them, and the ones that were worthwhile to do (in my opinion) were approved and paid very quickly. Some just wanted you to do too much work for what they were willing to pay, though.

@ivyparkgirl I do not do so well with the surveys. They say that they will only take twenty minutes, for example, and then they actually take about an hour. Also, I have had many not credit or disqualify me when I am almost done.

Cool. Where have you done CrowdSource work? Was it through CraigList or something? Thanks for the heads up on your experience.

If you failed at the English test, I do not even try, I know I could not succeed.

Passed the first one. Almost passed the second one. It's worth trying at least the first test.

@AdrienneJenkins It would be a waste of time, I know for sure I will never pass the the second test.

Except for the English test, I failed every test I took there. I admit after the second one I didn't try again. With your success at Squidoo, I think you should look at Wizzley. It's run by former Squids and they are very decent people. The community is also very supportive. There are lots of affiliate marketing opportunities there because they use Viglink. I am planning on writing wizzles to feature my YouTube videos and Zazzle products.

Wizzley, huh? Am I correct in assuming that it's similar to Squidoo? That's probably another one I'm going to add to my list...

@yukimori Yes. It's run by ex-squids. They monitor the site very closely and approve all articles. So you don't have to worry about spammers.

Thanks @NeldaHoxie now I don't feel so stupid. As for Wizzley, I looked at it very early on in its inception because I really liked "Chef Keem". O.K. will take a look as well.

I wasn't sure what the average person's experience would be. In some ways if you hate the test or find it difficult, I think it's a pretty good indication of the work that would be thrown your way.

I speak Canadian English. And it's so true that we often don't think about what's proper or not. It's worth a shot. All multiple choice so you get your score right away.

I may check them out, but right now I'm waiting to hear from a company a friend referred me to. She said she makes $1100 for one month of work, 20 hrs / wk. So I am going to evaluate it and see if it's true Here is a copy of her first pay stub

@AdrienneJenkins I finally heard back from them. I'm not hired, but they offered me the position as Social Media Evaluator. I'll be evaluating news feeds on facebook. I have to commit to 4 hours per day, 5 days per week. 1 must be a weekend day. I can handle that! Will keep you posted!

I was approved at CrowdSource as a Junior Writer about two years ago. The site was going through some big changes at the time. There were many writers disgruntled with the pay and the editing. I just lost interest as it wasn't worth the trouble.

@AdrienneJenkins Maybe it's different now. They do have a forum on MTurk dedicated to CrowdSource. That's where you can really get the dirt.
