At just 40 years old, the former New Zealand All Blacks rugby player Jonah Lomu is unexpectedly dead. He had a rocky health history, having received a donated kidney in 2004. It seems from recent media reports that this kidney had started to fail has he had been undertaking kidney dialysis. Jonah Lomu will be remembered as a terrific sports person and rugby's first millionaire.

I feel so sorry for his family. And he had health issues for a long time. Life mustn't have been easy for him

I was so sad to hear this, this morning. He was such a big personality, I remember him being called the Lomu-motive, and used to gawk in awe, whenever one of the players on my team tackled him during a game. Such a young age he still was too. May he rest in peace.

@bluesa I tried messaging you re this from my tablet yesterday morning when we learned, but it wouldn't go! And, in case you haven't heard, All Black aptain Richie McCaw announced his retirement today.

@valmnz , thank you for trying to let know, Val. So sad that he has passed away at such a young age, Lomu was a great Rugby player and person. I had not heard about Richie, but, I know that he did mention he would retire after the World Cup, I know the All Blacks are going to miss him as Captain, and fans around the world as a player.

I'm not a rugby fan but I live in a rugby mad country so I was always aware of what a force Jonah Lomu was in the game. It's a real shock to hear of his passing at such a young age.

I read Robin Lamb's post about Johan and watched a video of part of some of his matches. I couldn't believe how fast and agile he was. It's very sad.

@JudyEv - No, not a hope. That's not how things seem to work here. But thanks anyway.

@troyburns Do you think it helps (to mention it?) I wouldn't have thought so necessarily. But it's good if it does.

Yes. Sad for all of them, I imagine they will always think of that adventure with a tinge of sadness as it was the end of their life together as a family

I've seen a few stories linked via Facebook but that's about it. Nowadays I don't read the newspaper and rarely watch the box. Best wishes

I love the THE ALL BLACKS Rugby team. I toured Auckland 6 times already and saw The All Blacks Team during the parade as honor to their championship.

I was living in New Zealand when he was a popular player of the All Blacks. My kids adored him. RIP Jonah

The name Lomu comes to my mind when Rugby is mentioned. Sometimes, appearances can be deceptive as he was the man to emulate for physical fitness at his prime - siva
