Slurp or is it Slurping …Whatever it is… it’s annoying

As I sit at the dinner table trying to eat my food in the background, I hear slurp…slurp…slurp. This constant irritating noise keeps ringing in my ears. What could it be?
OH my god it is a person slurping his food.
Slurp here goes the tomato. Now another slurp as the noodle goes down. Oh no another slurp as they drink a glass of lemonade. What is it with slurping food?
I sometime wonder as a person sits and slurps on their food if they are too lazy to chew it and just prefer it to slither down their throat in giant chunks? Why else would anyone need to slurp all the time?
Let’s eat ice cream. That cold delicious treat that tastes so wonderful in your mouth as you sit and let it melt slowly, savoring each delicious bite. For a slurper this one isn’t possible. Each bite is a giant slurp as it passes through their mouth and goes directly down their throat.
Can you imagine how much this person has missed? I can because when I sit there and savor the delicious cold flavor of every mouthwatering bite as it slowly melts in my mouth and slides down my throat. This delicious cold flavor lingers in my mouth until I take another bite. But for a slurper it passes right through their mouth and down their throat. Oh, what a pity they have missed all the pleasures of eating ice cream.
Do people who slurp food irritate you?
Do you happen to have a slurper in your home?

I do that sometimes to annoy my wife
The last incident was yesterday evening when she was upset over some other thing and telling me all in depth about it. And I was not that interested at that moment, because I was sipping my coffee and there is no way to tell your wife or girlfriend that you are not interested. So I started doing that "Slurping" which I know annoys both of us.
Luckily that worked and she started talking about my slurping than continuing with her story

That is so mean. I love to laugh at these stories and the funny way people account them. All in all slurping ice cream is going a bit too far. I can see some noodles or even soup but ice cream come on now. There has to be a limit to what a person slurps.

@poehere Of course, slurping and making those noises when you eat are real irritating things. Cannot help it when someone does at the eateries. Lucking none in the family is into making such sounds. And I never do that - exception - at times I love annoying her. (I dont know if teasing can be used here as the better term).

@thesids Yes it can. I can see this to play around and to joke around. But when yuo say to them about this and then they eat normal. Not even once second later they are slurping again. What got me on this one is they said to me if you don't like it take your bowl and go eat in the other room! What? Me no way it is you who need to go take your bowl and go in the yard and eat with the dog. I was mad.
Anyhow I actually never planned on writing this one at all. I was speaking with a friend or a person I have meet on here about some different stuff. I was telling her about my tutor and how she made me write about a rock. Well one thing lead to another and I told her I bet I could make her laugh if I wrote a post about slurping. She said oh please do. that is how the slurping post came to life.

Slurping is a real negative to me. My father slurped and it drove me crazy - but i'm really here to say I love your new photo...

@AbbyGreenhill I think so. I think my blood is very thin because of being here on the islands for so long. This cold was bone chilling but I didn't mind one bit because it was new, refreshing, and I wanted to spend as much time outdoors as I could to take in the canyon and all it had t offer.

Thank you so much. I also see you've changed your. This was taken a few years back when I went to the US to visit my parents. They retired in California. I took them to the Grand Canyon for Christmas but we left the day after and were gone for 8 days. I froze my butt off there but I had the time of my life. No matter how cold it was I loved every second of it. I think here I have on 4 layers of clothes.

If they are going to slurp they need to go set alone somewhere and not bother people with their bad manners. Ick!

Yes I can see this one. Slurping soup has been a delight of all since the beginning.
I will let you in on a secret. I am sitting here laughing very hard tears are pouring out of my eyes. This slurping post was sort of a challenge with a person and I on the site. We were talking about writing about a rock and I said I bet I can make you laugh and write a post about slurping. She dared me and so now we have a slurping post.
I was serious about what I wrote in here and this really happens. I hate it when it does and at times I feel like I need to try and teach a grown man how to eat all over again. I never knew someone who could slurp so many different things. I even heard him slurp rice and mashed potatoes before. Wow soup is one thing but rice. How can that be.

I have to agree with you on this one. I hate a person to slurp everything they eat. I don't see how it adds to the enjoyment of food. I feel like putting the food in your mouth and chewing slowly is a lot more enjoyable than slurping it up and almost swallowing it whole.

it doesn't annoy me only because i have young children. they have a tendency to play with their food when they first start to eat alone and they find it enjoyable to slurp things because its apparently amusing to them to hear the sound especially with noodles. i will admit it is a bit funny when they suck the noodle up really fast and the tail end of it slaps them in the face. Its a bit of a shock the first time. However they get older and they stop doing those kinds of things

@poehere I think what happens sometimes is that they never out grow it or nobody every brought it to their attention soon enough to correct it in time before it became a life long habit. My wife had a bad eating habit but usually she does it when she is alone to avoid people bothering her. She prefers to eat most of her food with her hands as opposed to using utensils.

Oh god I know this feeling. I sort of feel like you are looking right at me and you saw I just put food in my mouth why ask me this now? I get annoyed when this one happens. It is amazing the timing of questions at a table. I think they do this to see if you'll answer or not.

No not at all. I experienced this a few days before I posted it here. I wanted everyone to enjoy the bowl of ice cream and feel it melting in your mouth. Then to be interrupted by the person next to you slurping his ice cream.

When I was looking-up the physics of slurping (to try and find out why people do it, I found out that the Universe will End in The Big Slurp!
The only thing I found on 'why people slurp' was ... not really about people. It was about why cats have to use "balance between opposing gravitational and inertial forces" to drink water (sticking their tongues in and out of the water really fast and letting the water into their mouths by perpetual-motion): because they can't shut their mouths enough to suck it in.
I guess humans' mouths get kinda tired and don't always form as tight a seal as they need to.
That and--like some responders like--they slurp soup in order to LET the air in around it, to cool it off a little.
BOSTON — If the "Higgs-like particle" discovered last year is really the long-sought Higgs boson, the bad news is that its mass suggests the universe will end in a fast-spreading bubble of doom. The good news? It'll probably be tens of

I think you just won the MyLot prize for the best explanation on slurping or why people slurp their food. That has got to be the funniest thing I have read in a while and it also is so true. I never tried to explain why a person does this one it is only annoying and can drive you crazy if they do it all the time.

@mythociate Well that is wonderful but it is hard to forgive a person who basically sits there and does it to annoy you. You tell them about it and they stop and then just stat up again. Now that one isn't fair at all.

Yes I personally can see how this can happen. I have a partner who is a slurper and it makes me crazy. I know he doesn't have to do this but for some reason he does. I wish he would stop because everyone just stares at him when he does. I can't believe he tells them if they don't like they can leave and go eat some place else. Not only a slurper but a rude one.

You are so right. I wrote this after a long discussion with another person. I did experience this ice cream one yesterday and was joking around with them about it. I decided to take the challenge and write it up. I really never thought it would catch the eye of too many people. I am happy you have read this and agreed with me slurping is annoying and shows such bad manors.

Well believe it or not it wasn't my son. I only have 1 daughter. This is my partner of 17 years. I guess by now he knows how to get to me. But this day was worse than others and he was being totally rude and slurping that ice cream. On top of this one he add coke to chocolate ice cream. Then he slurped it even more.

The only slurping I would find normal is a child slurping the last bit of his drink from a straw. Slurping food, that's a new one on me. I never seen anyone slurp food before. Maybe you should have video taped this. I bet it would have been a Youtube sensation.

@inertia4 OK next time we have ice cream and he starts to slurp it like he did I will make sure I have my trusty phone with me to record every last second of this one. I am sure people would love to see how a person can slurp ice ceram.

I don't know any Slurpers thanks be to God. I would get mildly irritated if I were in a restaraunt and there was a Slurper in my ear shot. They apparently weren't taught manners I would say is the problem. And yes to think of what they are missing on top of it. Have a blessed Thanksgiving and I pray there won't be any Slurpers at your table LOL

@poehere I am sorry to hear you don't celebrate Thanksgiving but given the fact that it was started in America with the settlers who were Christians and honored God on that day as they celebrated with Indians. I do understand why your country doesn't celebrate it. Do you celebrate Christmas, or Easter or Valentines Day?

Thank you so much. Here in Tahiti we don't celebrate this holiday. I only know of this holiday because my mom is American and we did celebrate it when I grew up in France. When we came home from school on this day there was always a big meal waiting for us and somehow she always seems to cook us a turkey.

Yes you are so right. I encountered one of these people last Sunday. He was sitting at the table shoveling food into his mouth with his hand, smoking, burping and farting. I had to take my order and leave. I would not site there and try to eat with such a person near me.
