I Used a Bad Word!

Yesterday, I tried to use a Bad Word, and was told that I couldn’t post my Discussion until I changed it! Obviously, I won’t be able to tell you exactly what it was, because I won’t be allowed to, but it was the Latin word meaning “with” – and that was exactly how I was using it! Well, to be accurate, I was using it as a linking word, in place of a back slash (hey, I hope I’m allowed to use that one!), which is perfectly legitimate usage. It didn’t even occur to me that it had an improper meaning, until I googled it and found it in the urban dictionary! I must admit, I’m slightly shell-shocked. I have had a classical education, and do use such terms quite often. Perhaps I’m being punished for being archaic!

This is so funny. Yesterday an online friend told me a similar story. She wanted to write something about her cat and use a colloquial word for the animal beginning with the letter 'p'. This was strictly against myLot's ethical standards, heehee.

I must admit, I had to delete the last sentence from this. To test them, I wrote, "It's a good thing I don't come from ..." inserting the name of a Yorkshire city beginning with S and ending in e which has an, er, interesting configuration of letters in the middle. Needless to say, I was told to fix the "bad word".

@cacay1 You don't have to careful. MyLot will inform you when you've used a 'bad' word.

This sounds stupid apparently my lot has not much confidence in the education and manners of its users. Why should my lot censor posts, I think members could easily censor each other. If someone is using swear words all the time I'm sure it will not be tolerated by the community. But if swear words or other so called indecent words are used in the right context I do not see a problem.

Yes, I don't altogether object to censorship per se - ignorant censorship I really find difficult to accept!

I was amazed that two of my words got through the filter this morning and I thought they would be banned. The bad word filter is a little quirky, but I think that without it, we'd spend a lot of time reporting posts with bad words in them.

Quite a lot of us have had to reconstruct as those bad words were not accepted. Mine was not a bad word in the context it was used.

My point exactly! In fact, I wouldn't even spell the "bad word" I used like that in the unlikely event that I was using it that way!

I too got caught out by Nanny McFee here for something I didn't consider so bad ...but it began with B and ended with H... and wasn't even being used in a derogeratory manner....fingers rapped!

Sometimes we need a second or third thought from others to arrive to the appealing and pleasant words. Thank you so much. I got a very important lesson from your story.

This sort of censorship, however, is neither instructive nor useful!

They have to do it clear across the board or there would be some very naughty things going on. I don't think any of us want that.
