Does the death penalty serve its purpose?

Why is death penalty considered the ultimate punishment? What purpose does the execution of say, a mass murdering terrorist serve except a sense of vindication in the minds of the people who have been affected by the terrorist? As far as punishment to the criminal is concerned, isn't spending a long time or even the rest of his life in a small dark cell (as in life imprisonment without parole) a more terrifying prospect than a quick, painless death considering that most of the terrorists are not as afraid of dying anyway?

Maybe it does, maybe it does not. But, what I am more concerned with is the senseless deaths. I pray for the eternal repose of their souls.

@vandana7 Although not all Trials could not prove or disprove the guilt of most offenders.

I really don't want to spend the rest of my or his life footing the bill to keep a terrorist under wraps. There are innocent people out there that need shoes, medical care and daily food.

You also paid your taxes so America could bomb Iraq and Afghanistan. 500.000 people where killed there, most of them innocent people.. Do you feel ok about spending your tax money that way ?

@peterstreep That question is way to big to answer in a comment box. If our leaders (meaning ALL the leaders from around the world) can't figure it out...

I don't think it is a deterrent for crime either.
