His misfortune is my good fortune

I am currently part time at my job so I am limited in the hours I can work to less than 20 hours a week. There's talk of me possibly getting full time at some point, but there is no date yet as to when that may happen. I am going to be given the opportunity, along with the other two part timers, to get more hours for the month of December. We have all been offered 10 extra hours for that month, so we will be able to get up to 30 hours instead of just under 20 hours like usual. This is good for me as I wasn't sure how we were going to be able to afford Christmas this year.
Unfortunately this good fortune is coming at the misfortune of one of the full timers. He hurt his ankle a few weeks ago and when it didn't get any better after a few days he went to the doctor to have it looked at. The x-ray wasn't very clear so they ordered an MRI which he was able to get last week. Turns out he has a hole in the cartilage in his ankle. The only treatment for this is to have surgery done, so that is what he is doing. He will be gone for at least two weeks, but it will probably be three or more weeks. Since we will be short his 40 hours for what looks like most to all of December our boss was able to get extra hours for us part timers approved by HR. I'm glad for the extra hours, but I feel bad for him having to have surgery too. Hopefully the surgery fixes the issue so he won't have any more pain in that ankle.

Sometimes good things come with a downside but I am sure he will be fine and back to work after recovery

A few years ago I worked at an old peoples home and the other lady had a breakdown and we all had to share her hours. It was nice to earn extra but boy were we tired at the end of it. Plus we were short staffed anyway. I worked three 60 hour weeks plus looked after my family . The money was nice but we were all pleased to see her back.

Since I'm only part time, the extra hours aren't nearly that much. I am allowed 30 hours total, same with the other part timers. If we weren't allowed the extra hours the full timers would have to work a lot of overtime to make up the missing hours. I don't think I could handle working 60 hours a week. That gets to be too many hours to work.

The important thing for your coworker is that he is getting his ankle fixed. Sounds like a very painful condition.
