Do Young People Still See Smoking As Cool?

Back in my youth, many of my TV and movie heroes smoked. Jack Regan and George Carter would puff their way through a whole packet of Embassy Regal in each episode of The Sweeney, and guests on the Parkinson Show would pass the ashtray around as they chatted. Smoking was cool - and I was quick to take it up.
Photos of Hollywood stars of that era would often feature a cigarette to indicate 'sophistication' (yet this was always a freshly-lit lengthy job, not a cig-end between the lips, the rising smoke from which stung the eyes).
In these enlightened times, however, we know the truth about smoking; that is it a debilitating, expensive and potentially fatal pastime. I ditched the wicked weed almost twenty years ago - and I'll never start again.
But does smoking have any semblance of sophistication attached to it these days, or are our kids clued in enough to know better?

Young people are fearless and don't think anything is going to harm them.

I hope that young people are smarter than us because they are now well informed about the damage smoking can dod to our health.

But there are those who don't think anything bad can happen to them. They think they are invincible and will smoke as much as they want (my son is that way, even after we told him over and over as a kid how dangerous it is),

@LeaPea2417 the youth always think they are invincible. I don't know if smoking is still "cool" when young but I think many more still smoke regardless of the warnings

Everybody knows it is harmful to smoke. Usually the grown up people will make up the mind to quit it. However, some youngs still think it is cool to smoke. As sometimes I can see some high school students who smoke in the street. They don't even feel guilty for it.

I would hope they would not pick it up, but I am sure they will. My brother picked it up and I never thought he would.

It seems that in most movies and TV shows in the states, only the villains smoke. I note that more people smoke in British programs. I think that a certain number of teens still think it's cool and smoke for the same reasons they always did - rebellion against parents and everything people tell them.
