How Important Really is a Subtitle?

I usually don't put a subtitle on most of my article, I used to write in some revenue sharing sites (writing sites) as there is no option for you to do it. But I just found out today that you can possibly put a subtitle aside from your headings on blogger and I do think you can possibly do that on wordpress too. But I am not just so sure if putting a subtitle will help your article to get a higher ranked on Google? I don't know how these search engine do rank your article, as I am sure not all articles that will appear on the first page of each search engine results are of high quality content, there are some really short articles that ranks high on search engine. I would like to know how SEO works, I've noticed that when you use a more specific tags on wordpress (it doesn't work the same on blogger) I have tested it already and it works very well. Let say you are writing about mylot then your tags must include mylot alone as your specific tags and adding more tags.
