Overpowering Smells at Kmart Gave Me a Huge Headache

For people who don't know the US, Kmart is a low-end retail store that has prices that are lower than WalMart in my area. I went there for some stuff like Pinesol and mouse traps. The place had an overwhelming collection of scents today. They added seasonal potpourri to the air fresheners, laundry detergent and everything else. There was no one on the floor to help me find anything, so I was there for about a half-hour. I had the worst headache when I left.If they keep doing that the low prices won't be worth it for me.

I'd go to the dollar store for stuff like that. Maybe it won't smell so badly. I hate smells, I use all no perfume products when I can.

I like real essential oils. They do not seem to bother me.

@GardenGerty I cannot tolerate many smells, I gave up perfume long ago. I use fragrance free deodorant, etc.

It wasn't pefumes that stank. It was the detergents, cheap and faux leather, potporri. I will try the dollar store or odd lot next time and see how they are I don't tolerate smells well any more. It began with my recent illness, so it's a new thing for me.

You are lucky. While I love low prices, I think I have found my limit.

I have always gotten headaches from the laundry aisle. Tide was a big offender. Yes, the chemical seasonal fragrances make me want to take a respirator.

I think merchants should rethink their merchandizing policies.

I no longer use candles because of their scent or the fire danger.

Once I was there, I did stay and find everything. I didn't want to have to go back.

Our local Kmart is more expensive than Walmart. I recently went to the local Walmart and they had all of the Christmas isles set up in the front of the store. One isle was all candles, wax melts, insense etc. It was overwhelming. I have allergies and my nose instantly started itching. I had to get out of the immediate area. I probably would have walked out with a headache and a huge allergy attack if I had hung around the area. I think I would shop somewhere else if you don't get any help and end up leaving with a headache.

I find the smells difficult in box stores, but even worse are the bright lights and "pinging" sounds, especially at the cash. I avoid those stores when I can.

Ick. I am hypersensitive to aromas. I would have left immediately.

There is no smell in the K-Mart in our area. That is the only place that I can get clothes to fit me.

A little trick that may help with something like that is carry a tiny container with you maybe like a empty camera film container or even a empty spice bottle with closing lid. Fill it with either coffee beans or ground coffee. When your senses become overwhelmed by too many fragrances smell that. I don't remember where I came across the information it was a long time ago, I was learned that after about the 3rd scent that is different its like you are nose blind. It worked for me plus I love the smell of coffee.
