Where Do the Emoticons Come From?

Some people sprinkle little emoticons throughout their posts and comments, and, since I am ALWAYS the last one to find stuff out when it comes to computer stuff, I want to know how to do this. Can you help me find my own stash?
I think that when I am still plugging away at a colon and parenthesis to impart a smile, that I am beyond help. But where do these little guys come from?
For all of you who are willing to help me out, I appreciate it.

seems folks've already answered yer query :) fer myself? i rarely use 'em 'n some folks seem to do a bit'f o'erkill with 'em. i'm more comfy with :), prolly coz 'tis jest a habit 'n took me eons to figure that much out. i do use those emo thingies e'ery now 'n then, but don't reckon i'd put 'em in a discussion. heck, i'm too lazy to use the bold 'n italic options, much less go huntin' down emo's.

I am a "once-in-awhiler" too, but on occasion, I like to toss one in. Thank you so much for your reading and help.

@crazyhorseladycx @ThankyouLord I'm not fond of them either. I occasionally use the three smile/funny ones. They're so small I have at them to see what they're trying to tell me. The smile one is useful if I want to be sure someone doesn't take something I say too seriously.

Oh, I cannot wait. I love them! But I guess emoticons are like chocolate. You don't want to overdo it. (I wonder what one would taste like?)

well, emote icons are there under the "end up to 5 tags...", myLotCode. that is where emote icons are found.

I get the feelin you already got plenty of answers.
I accidentaly found them because of losing control of my mouse, usually I keep it on my knee and it'll start to slip, that time I was glad it did.
