The Plant Graveyard

From the time my late niece was about 6; she is the one who would think to water our house plants.
My mom would always have nice plants started, potted and ready for me to take home when I visited. She tried so hard to help my niece, my daughters and I to have a nice home.
But as a single mom I was just busy and frazzled and the house plants didn't make my list of important things to get done.
Most of the plants died long lingering deaths. I seemed to just not notice their demise. One day my late niece said, "Can I take this out to the plant grave yard?" She was referring to yet another neglected plant that didn't make it.
Another thing I hadn't noticed was the accumulation of pots with dead house plants out in the back yard. It was indeed a house plant graveyard. Her question just made me laugh; plant grave yard became a house hold term and the memory still gives me a smile.
After my mother found out she asked for all of her pots back. My mom still planted new plants for us, but she gave them directly to my niece with clear instructions on their care.
I still can't keep house plants alive. Luckily my husband can.

My grandmother, believe it or not, has a bunch of fake plants in her garden. I think that's rather smart on her part because she doesn't have to worry about taking care of them. Honestly if you don't get too close to them you can't even tell that they aren't real and since they are outside most people wouldn't think twice if they were real or fake.

I go through phases with them. I have some monster sized ones that have been around for years. Others, smaller ones, die almost immediately.

If at all plants die in our garden that would have nothing to do with me as I care for them the best way I can. It is the weather that does them in sometimes
I prefer to call my garden paradise.

I have one Christmas cactus that I've managed to keep alive but I think it would thrive regardless. I have no luck with plants even if they are supposed to be hardy. What a nice memory to share with us

I'm sorry for you loss, I would miss her too and so would the plants dying in the window. I never notice until they are gasping at their last breath. My husband has noticed it's not a priority for me either so he waters them now.

I am still a bit like that. My poor plants need to be very tough to survive in our house. And I have lots of empty pots too.
