I Miss Talking to People real life, not myLot talking

Read a few discussions about retiring and great customer interactions, so it made me think about my own. I was forced two years ago to retire from a new landlord who bought the building i had my store for 23 years...he wanted to put in a bar so i was forced out. Now that i am retired it is ok but i do miss that daily interaction of talking to real people.listening to their woes or glees and talking back..one on one. Being on myLot and going to a discussion , you basically listen to what they say and then write back to interact...it could be within a few minutes or an hour they return back to you, or it could be days, or a month. I just wish we could hear the voice and speak, or maybe it would defeat the purpose of talking..what do you think?..Would really hearing the person deter you from a one on one conversation?.. Like i said..I miss seeing the people in person, speaking directly to them. looking in their eyes knowing they are there for me, not just to make a response and then go onto the next person.. Oh well i am up earlier than normal..caller line one are you there?..Your brownies are ready!

That's a shame. Maybe you could find a part time job or do some volunteering to get a bit more people time.

@boiboing..I tried applying for many jobs..no one wants a 64 yr old and i am unable to stand more than an hour..my right ankle broke 2 times one year after the other from falling in a hole and out my front door and the quack doctor never fixed it right so i'm disabled kinda..

@Rosekitty That is such a shame and it sounds very painful. Do you have any clubs or social societies around where you live?

@Rosekitty I know, two of my aunts owned a shop and they missed talking with people when they retired.

While interacting here may lack the depth of conventional friendship, I feel it compensates because there are no undercurrents of anger, jealousy, and what not.

You asking me Since 2008 I have been at home. Not that I dont go out, but it is not on a regular daily basis. These past few months I have started going out to get groceries. Else, it was mainly the yearly visits to my doctor in a different state and an overnight train journey (21 hours). That yearly visit was the only time I got to see many people - live. I know how horrible it feels when you stay all time inside the four walls and have practically, only the walls staring back at you or the computer monitor. The only other persons around - my wife, the landlady(89 years) downstairs and her son(about 52). Wife at home from 4:00pm but as she has always some work or the other even at home, we barely get into regular interactions. At times, I do cooking or even the utensils just because I want her to have some time of her own. Sorry, if I sounded gloomy. But that is how things are at my end. I have learned to live with this now. And am trying to make it somehow more interesting for me. If there ever was a caller line.... maybe it would only complicate matters given the cultural background she (wife) comes from.

Well, if your wife cooks well, you both are welcome. My cooking is atrocious. Dad puts up with it, because he has no choice.

We have been retired 14 years, we have moved 4 times so we don't have a lot of 'friends' and that's ok. The people we interact with are those we choose to do so with. We live in the country so talking to people online is more convenient anyway.

@Rosekitty ..yeah...Micky mouse with red pants ..I know that guy...he used to flirt with all the mice here, and sow wild oats. When his girlfriends turned wives started claiming child maintenance he ran away to the US. Now, we are struggling to feed those mice because animal rights activists believe they have a right to live too.

I am not a phone person (never was), but I do enjoy talking one on one with someone in person - as long as it does not become a one sided conversation (which it will often become with certain friends I have, sigh). As a stay at home mom, I enjoy my little chats with folks when I am out - whether it's with other parents, cashiers, random strangers I meet, whomever . . . I always manage to open my mouth - ha ha. When I used to work, it was pretty cool meeting others in the community and getting to know them - and some of the employees (when there were any) were kooky and I had a lot of fun with them. I do miss that too. But I must say I do enjoy being here and chatting with you all - gives me my daily smiles!

Hi R. I recall you having to get out of that place for your shop..what a terrible ordeal and a thing to happen to you, I know it was so hard on you. Yes, well I recall in my profession, I was very personal one on one for people, but now I couldnt cope with it if you paid me to do it. Sadly.

I make sure I have real people contact every day - over and above that with my husband. Sometimes it's just going to the corner store or the library and having a brief exchange. There are probably lots of people out there who would welcome a few words with you.

That is my favorite part of any job... my coworkers and my customers. I've had jobs where I have not had any customers and I didn't like those jobs much. I've had jobs where I've hated my coworkers or my customers or both, and those jobs were no good either. The best jobs are where I like my coworkers and I like my customers.. or at least most of them. I enjoy my current job a lot. There are a couple coworkers I don't like much, and a couple customers I don't like much... but for the most part I get along well with all of my coworkers and my customers and it makes the job fun and enjoyable.

@katsmeow1213 i think there are many people like you who show that they love their job and co workers and then some who look like they just don't care..i wish they would leave and find a job they love instead of bringing their down feelings to others..

I worked in home heath care in the past. I visited many different clients every day and I really enjoyed meeting a lot people and talking to a lot of people every day. I miss that. I love to interact on the internet, but it isn't the same as a face-to-face conversation. I often wondered what it would be like to hear the voices of the other members. It would be a fascinating mix of different accents, and I probably wouldn't understand everything

When I choose to talk to real strangers one on one, I usually do it to feel some closeness, to feel we are both human and that we have something in common. It makes me feel good. In Mylot, the main medium is text, there is no voice and there is no real face to see, no body language to read, so, the text has to be a lot more complex to be equal somehow to a real conversation. With real people we can shake hands, do stuff together in the future... I think the internet is just a stage in the evolution of humanity until we all figure out that we can be connected even without the internet if we just give it a try.
