Tales of the Village – Three Pubs and a Pubcat

Someone once told me, many years ago, that you never meet anyone worth knowing in a pub and up to now, he's not been proven wrong. Our village has not one but three pubs and I don't really rate any of them. With a population of around 5000 people, you might think a village like ours could easily support three drinking establishments. Add in the inhabitants of the villages nearby that have no pubs, and it seems like a pretty good catchment area. In reality, that's not the case at all. All three are struggling to survive and one closed recently because the manager couldn't make a go of it. In the 11 years we've lived in the village, each pub has changed hands several times.
Each of the three is completely different. One is popular with pensioners and is more of a restaurant than a pub. Nobody under 35 would be caught dead in there. The food is OK but there's such an air of age and decay about the place (no, I'm not talking about the customers) though I noticed recently that they had painted over the terrible dark colours and wood chip wallpaper. The second of the pubs is in a beautiful old stone building with a large, stunning conservatory. For a few years it was an excellent place to eat but we've not eaten there for several years. It's probably the place more likely to attract in people from other villages and the clientele is slightly younger than the first.
And finally there's my cat's pub. He is a pedigree Blue Burmese so you might imagine that he'd want to find a posh pub. Quite the opposite. Baloo hangs out with all the local builders, plumbers, window cleaners and electricians. His is the pub where – according to my old neighbour – the barman can fix you up with some veterinary grade ketamine or plenty of more conventional stimulants. Baloo is totally adored by the regulars who started a Facebook page for him about 18 months ago. We've been called out late at night when he won't get off the pool table and somebody wants us to 'take him home' but mostly he just gets handed around from one person to the next getting cuddled and adored. I have never eaten or drunk in that pub and think it unlikely I ever will but it's reassuring to know my lad is being well looked after.
And now the latest dining controversy is the forthcoming opening of an Indian restaurant. I think sparks will fly.

Many pubs are suffering these days. I was walking the dog past our local pub on Friday night at 10:15pm. I counted 8 people in there. This was a place that was heaving about 10 years ago. Mind you, at almost £4 for a pint in a local pub it's understandable people are just pre-loading at home then getting taxis into town!!
I might be inclined to go in there myself if they had a pub cat!!!
I vote for the Indian restaurant.

@WendySpickerman I would walk around my village at night on my own at that time of night and not worry at all. That's the difference between life in the country and in a city.

@WendySpickerman To be honest, although I live in a very densely populated suburb of a large city, since getting a dog just over a week ago and hence being forced to walk the streets so to speak, I have been staggered at how few people are walking around the area. Whether that's out of fear or down to laziness I couldn't really say. It's just so quiet. Almost eerily so!!

Well, I did. While living in South Africa I met a wonderful man in a pub. We saw each other for about a year. I would have married him, if he had asked. Oh, right. I guess that means that he wasn't as smart as I thought, which proves your thesis. Nevermind.

On my most recent visits to the UK I have found the gastro pub phenom to be reassuring. We have found some great places with outstanding food. I guess your village was not on our agenda!! lol At least your cat has found one he likes.

The pubs and restaurants are empty in our little village. The reality is that Switzerland is too expensive and we are too close to the Italian border. You can go to drink something in Italy in ten minutes driving and you spend less than a half.
Did you change the title of your discussion? I was unable to open it through the People/Discussion link, I had to come to your profile.

@Jessicalynnt I have photos from his face book page of him curled up on the bar on a bar towel. We have to hope the new owners won't have a dog. He HATES dogs.

My town is smaller than yours and we've got 3 bars... we call them bars, sorry. One has been around forever, it's said to be haunted. I don't know about their clientele as I've actually never stepped foot in there although it's right down the block from me. There's another one that is old and has a lot of old people go there. Then a newer one that does a ton of big concerts. I keep saying one of these days we should go to one of the bars... but we don't drink much and when we do we'd rather do it from home.

The other day I read about a pub that has more than one cat in it..loads of them in fact, a bit like those Cat Cafes that are springing up. I quite like the idea as I have no cat of my own anymore and I miss cuddling up to mine, listening to her purr. As far as the pubs go here in Carlisle, there are a few but one that seems to be doing very well is the Real Ale Pub called Moo Bar. Apparently, there is already one in Penrith (loads of pubs there) and the owner has expanded into Carlisle. I've not been in there yet but if me and hubby go out New Year's Eve I'd like to pop in as Real Ale Pubs are now becoming popular with younger people, who are fed up with Foster's, Carling and John Smith's!

I saw that article. I hope the place doesn't smell. Sadly Baloo would not share. Last week the guy who runs the recycling shop (where Baloo likes to do 'security' duty) found a kitten and Baloo hissed and puffed up at the poor, tiny thing. He wants to be the centre of attention.

Unfortunately Baloo's appearances to entertain the pub crowd are very much on his own terms. He's a rather unreliable 'employee'.
