Every year my husband and I receive a fruitcake from a well meaning friend or acquaintance and every year we give it away. My husband and I am among the group of people who do not like fruitcake. I'm sure some of them are absolutely delicious but we just never acquired a taste for it. What surprises me is the fact that both of us like a holiday cookie called "Santa's Whiskers". Why does this surprise me? They both have candied fruit and nuts in them. I always thought it was the candied fruit that I didn't care for. Apparently it isn't. The dough for the cookie is a light color, I wonder if that is why. Whatever is in the dough may be what I don't care for. Anyway, while other people are enjoying their fruitcake I will be happily munching on my cookies. How do you feel about fruitcake? Do you love it or are you in the not so much group?

I love a good fruitcake and my sister makes the best: lots of rum in it.

With fruitcake timing is everything. The only time you should eat it is paired with coffee or some other hot drink. And then only for breakfast, it's just usually too heavy as a desert, especially after a big meal. But I like fruitcake, at least I like mine -which is mom's recipe. I'm fortunate to live in an area where people know how to make them. The one in your picture looks like a door stopper. Have you ever had Ice Box Fruitcake?

@Nameless maybe that's what I'm doing wrong. I need to try it at breakfast with coffee. I never have tried an Ice Box Fruitcake.

@HazySue So far I haven't met anyone who does not like the Ice Box variety. If you get the chance try it.

We all have our preferences.I love fruit cake...My dad's business partner gave us fruitcake at Christmas, and he makes the best fruit cake because it is home made, so ingredients are not scrimped so it really tastes delicious. Thanks for sharing.

@lizbenetua I do agree that homemade fruitcakes are typically better than the store bought.

We used to order a fruitcake every year from Corsicana, Texas. It was the best! But my husband had to change his diet for health reasons and so … no more fruitcake. That and the fact that we can't afford it any more. Fruitcakes are a tad bit expensive. But Christmas only comes once a year. Were it not for those two reasons - diet change and finances - it would still be a tradition. I love a piece of fruitcake with a cup of coffee.

I made a fruitcake last year and it was good, but I do not like most of those sold in the grocery stores.

I haven't had fruitcake in ages but probably wouldn't want to receive one as a gift.

One of my Aunts always gave out fruitcakes every Christmas. I tried one once. It was dry and full of yuck. Ever since I passed it to a friend or family member in hopes of it being enjoyed. At a family get together it was disclosed that everyone else did the same. I wonder where all those fruitcakes ended up? It's my hope that a true fruitcake lover received them and not the landfill.

@Robert57 I envision them floating around in the postal system being passed from person to person.
