Do You Like To People Watch?

When I was growing up, my mother used to love to people watch. Whenever we would go to a restaurant in the mall, she would pick a table close to the entrance so she could watch people walk by.
Now she wasn't subtle at all. If someone caught her looking at them, she would just stare them down. I would get so embarrassed but it never bothered her at all. I wonder now what she was thinking as she watched all these people walk by.
I do find myself people watching now but when I do, I am much more subtle about it. I will look away if someone happens to catch my eye. Most of the time, I am wondering about the people I see and what goes on in their lives. Why are they in such a hurry? Do they have problems going on in their lives like I do? Do they have a loving family or are they all alone? Things like that always cross my mind.
Do you like to people watch? What are you thinking as these people walk by?

Sometimes I do, I enjoy seeing what they are wearing I really never try to figure out anything about them. Pretty much I have so much on my mind that I am oblivious to what is going on around me when I sit at a restaurant. lol

@BelleStarr You always have so much going on that I can understand why you take every free moment to think about things.

its really something different but pointed topic, most of people have this kind of habits but i like to enjoy it and we always looking for different thing then common.when i in restaurant i first see their dress-up the see their faces so if they are happy to come here or just bring by someone by force.then also see they just come for dinner or also want to enjoy with it because i saw some family who is very serious at dinner and not speak and we enjoy them.and some are over enjoy by shouting and just imagine that if they are here this then how at home or office.

when i was a young girl we lived on the top floor of a duplex and we would entertain ourselves watching the people walk by..it was fun cause they never noticed us since we were far up, but if i people watched as i got older, i would smile back if someone spotted me looking..just to let them know i was caught and they attracted my attention..

@rosekitty most people would look away. i guess smiling back is better and might even get a friendly or positive reaction.

@simone10 I find airports rather strange and often a bit traumatic. Many people seem to be very sad about parting from loved ones as you can imagine. There is this ambivalence about whether they are happy to be going or not. Only those who are leaving without any family seeing them off seem at ease.

people watching is an essential part of being a writer - you think about who they are and what they do. You see a fragment of their lives and try to complete the story, imagine how the conversations you overheard concluded, etc. Writers have to be discreet nosey parkers

@simone10 I used to look at people and try to figure out their stories based on observation. it's funny as hell.

O, I also do that! But I only people-watch those "extremes." I don't watch ordinary or normal people. I love watching very pretty ladies as well very old people. It is fun!

I like to do it too. Just love the fact that every human being is born different which makes it even more exciting to watch.

I used to do it a lot when I was much younger and I learned a lot about people from that. I like to think of if more as a study of the human species

Since I always have my Christmas shopping finished before Thanksgiving, I like to go to a cafe at a big mall and watch the hurried shoppers. So much fun.
