The $100++ Trash Can

So I was browsing through some things on sale at Amazon today and found this infrared-sensor touchless trash can. It's supposed to detect motion within inches of the sensor range and the lid would open automatically. Not sure if I'll ever need something like that. I thought the step trash can is a brilliant invention already, but wow. Touchless, with infrared sensor, now? Can't help wondering how many people would spend over $100 on a trash can. Would you splurge on a high-tech trash can?

I often think that some of these things are made simply because "it's possible" or maybe someone bought a job lot of infra-red sensors. I certainly don't have $100 to spend on a trash can that opens its lid if I throw things at it. I have one without a lid for that!

Precisely @owlwings why would we bother to spend $100?

Exactly! I'm surprised at how many unnecessary inventions there are these days. I also think they're made simply because it's possible. They're going to start "infrared-ing" everything soon.

@Beatburn I really can't help wondering what sort of people would be interested in spending that amount of money on a trash can.

Hell No!!! I am ready to make the effort of lifting the lid and put the garbage on!! But I admire the person who came up with this idea!!(Credit where credit is due)

Actually come to think of it, it might be beneficial for people with disabilities. But then again just like with any other technology there's always a risk of the sensor not working. So I don't know how many people are willing to spend money on that, even if it's a cool thing to have.

@cahaya1983 Yeah!! I don't think that people with disability will have to or still worry about throwing the trash.. I am sure someone in the family will be doing it anyways!!

@Rationalwriter Unless they live alone, yeah. But I'm sure most of them can survive without it anyway.

It seems a useful device but it appears to be too costly to buy. I would not prefer to buy it. Would you?

Definitely not. I find it totally unnecessary, I'm pretty happy with my current trash can.

@dpk262006 The step kind. No bells and whistles but hey, it's still touchless!

Will it guarantee my safety as I walk past it... you know, there is always a shortage of space in the rooms and even the kitchen at my place

@cahaya1983 I will still not appreciate emerging unswallowed from a trash can though

@cahaya1983 The price of the one sold here was about 50$, but I would not pay that price for a trashcan.

I just read a review saying that the sensor stopped working after a couple of months. So much for high-tech. I'm happy with my step trash can.

No , thanks . I would rather buy some nice things with that amount . I am too satisfied with that trash bin that opens once you step on the one that make it open at its base.

That's what I use, too. I don't see any reason why I would use anything more advanced than that.

@cahaya1983 we don't even splurge on the trash guys that come collect the garbage. Here we have to pay these guys monthly. We burn our burnable trash and the rest we ship off to a dump. So now we would not pay that kind of money for a trash can.

That's what I thought when I saw that item. I do just fine with my conventional trash can. I sure don't need an automatic one for that - especially one worth over $100!

I could just get an empty can and cover with paper, and I could use that as my trash can or garbage bin.

I am happy enough with the step trash can. I don't think I'd ever invest $100 for a trash can, I wonder how reliable and durable it is. I still prefer simple things.

In fact I had thought about buying an infrared-sensor touchless trash can in the past. Because it will be convenient and clean for me. But I am afraid whether it is durable. If it can't work one day, perhaps it is just a luxurious useless trash can and it is not worth.

Well I know it comes with an open/close button as well, but still...it just shows that there's always a possibility of the sensor not working. In that case, like you said, it would just be a useless fancy thing to have.
