Go solar power, go?

Is solar power the way to go? Any dangers or is it all safe? I have no idea. I'm just wondering? What do you know and think?
Can Baoding, where residents live under a toxic shroud of smog, lead China's green energy revolution?

around here its still relatively new, but i hear that theres been a lot of problems.
the two most frequent ones i hear are repair bill and roof problems. everytime a repair person goes to work on your panels its about $120 bill and the person will get there whenever possible. the second is problems with leaking roofs, because holes have to be made on your roof to anchor the panels for the bolts to go through, over time rain water will work its way in and mess up your roof. because of this roof problem, many home insurance companies are looking into raising rates for houses with roof mounted panels.

We don't have ours on our roofs-there are other options. We haven't needed any repairs on ours yet, and it's been a few years since we've had them. The biggest issue with that is researching good products-there are a lot of people who are selling garbage based on ignorance...and it's a shame because there are very good benefits-as I said above, we've cut our electric bill down by 300$ a month.

@Plethos You've tried mounting them inside windows or using skylights?

its not as effecient as one thinks. only a small percentage of the suns rays is converted to energy. ill wait for when one small sized solar panel, the size of a current dish satellite for t.v. can power a whole house. my belief, if t.v. dishes can shrink in size and become more effecient, so can solar panels.

It may be one of the cleanest ways to generate electricity, and the cheapest, if the panels are installed the right way.

Solar isn't the answer, nor are intermittent power sources. Producing solar panels is enormously polluting for that city, also as most panels will be exported, it's a losing game. With smog so thick, popular crystalline panels won't work at all. The new coal plants are a short term solution, but China will need to go more on Nuclear. Solar isn't "set & forget" as most think.

Like I said elsewhere, solar power is saving about 300$ a month off of our (insanly overpriced) electricity-I honestly have fears of what will happen here as the Provincial government has promised it going up 40% over the next while.
