My younger female cousin got married two days age. Maybe you can image what doweries she will get : a car, furniture ,money and so on, But there is something special you really don't know: that's lots of shoes, those shoes are not produced by machine and they are totally weaven by herself. In my hometown, here the girl would be consider as virtuous if she knows how to knit those bootees. Due to that, now I am a little worried about that what I should do when I will get married some day , just because I really don't know how to do those sort of things. perhaps, I would be consider as an idiot. How pathetic I am!

give and take dowries for marriage in India is a crime by law. But it vary as different kinds of gifts as you have mentioned like car, gifts, ornaments etc. In India normally bride's house give presents to bridegrooms house. I think your custom is just opposite.

It's a news to me that system of dowry also prevails at your place. If shoe making is must for you, then you should learn it, if you want to get a good match.

I thought in China as long as you can produce "car, $$$, a fancy wedding, and some furnishing for the house" it's a good dowry. Don't worry about the bootees, go to Taobao and order a bunch!

In my place girl gives gifts to her husband's house. Gold, pocket money, land, car these all are given to the bridegroom. They only put a mangalsutra.
