Do You Like To Play Poker?

I learned how to play poker before I ever went to school. My father was a bit of a gambler. Nothing big time, but he taught me and my brothers how to play poker because he liked to play himself and we would play in the evenings and on week ends. We had a big jar of pennies and we would divide those up and place our bets.
My mother and father BOTH liked to play Bridge, Canasta and Pinochle too, so we all learned those card games also.
There are dozens of Poker games and I know most of them, such as Baseball, Follow the Queen, Spit and Deuces, Deuces and Jacks and the Man With the AX, Texas Hold 'Em, of course, and many others.
Are you familiar with these games of Poker?
We will be traveling to my son's house in NC in a couple of weeks and will be staying for about a week. We do this every year over the holidays, because he and his wife have time off work. I will be taking my 14 year old grandson with me, like I do every year, since he will be out of school.
My son has planned a Jeopardy Night and a Poker Night. Some of their friends come over and they bring food and we prepare food and desserts and we play poker until one or two o'clock in the morning. We use Poker Chips, but its a really FUN night. I always look forward to it.
He also has other plans for us to eat at some new restaurants in the area and to visit a winery. We always have a really good time.

@marlina It was just something I grew up with and all my boys like it. They don't gamble though, none of them. We just play with poker chips or pennies.

@Marcyaz A lot of people feel that way. I just happen to enjoy it since I grew up with it and we have fun playing with poker chips. We do a lot of visiting and talking and eating while we play so its lots of fun for an evening of entertainment at home.

I play poker on Facebook. GSN and Double down are ones that have gambling on them. I have gone gambling in Vegas and a couple other towns but that is all. Not as into as my BFs always were though.

I know how to play poker but very seldom play it. My father used to play with some friends every once in a while for a penny buy in. I don't know how to play anything but straight poker. We usually played Canasta or some type of game like that at home. You sound like you will be having a fun time playing cards and going out to dine at some nice restaurants.

When I was a child that was a game my parents and my brother and I played on the weekends. I don't know of any of the other poker games just straight poker.

Canasta is a good game too. We used to play that a lot, but I haven't played for year now. No one to play with. I prefer "straight" poker, but there are a lot of different games and we play "dealer's choice" so we have to learn the all.

Friendly games basically is what we always played, either with pennies we put back in the jar when we were finished, or poker chips. No real gambling going on.

I like to play poker too and that's why when I go to my son's, I know he will have a poker night where he invites over some friends and we have some good food and conversation along with a night of playing poker. We really enjoy it.

@Marcyaz I don't often have anyone to play cards with either. My kids who live near me like to play but NONE of their spouses do, so we can only get together once in awhile. Darn!

@IreneVincent Yep I preferred more board games like chess etc. I guess I prefer games where it's an even playfield, poker has some luck of draw to it.

It's a fun game but lots of people, like you, have never really gotten into card games. I grew up with it, so I love to play cards.

Poker is not that popular with a lot of people. That's why I was curious to find out how many of you here on this site, liked to play. Haven' t really found anyone who is really into it yet. Not that it matters. I was just curious.

Poker can be complicated if you play a lot of different games like we do, but straight poker like 5 card draw or 7 card stud is not too difficult to learn as long as you know what combination beats the next combination and that's what usually confuses people who don't play very often. For instance, does a straight beat a full house or four of kind? My daughter can't ever remember.

Yes, some people learn in college. Mostly "blackjack" or "21" but I don't care at all for that game. I prefer the more skilled versions of poker. Blackjack is just mostly the luck of the cards that happen to come up. With some other poker games there is more skill involved but then again, it's mostly just the luck of the right cards coming up when you need them.

I like to bowl also. I used to belong to a bowling league but had to give it up after some surgery I had to have. I have never played lawn tennis, but I have played hard court tennis. I had to give that up also.

I've never heard of sheepshead. I'll have to look that one up. I have a "Book of Hoyle" that explains various card games. I'll see if I can find that one. I'm always interested in learning a new game.

@IreneVincent It was big when I was growing up. My parents would play cards with the neighbors on Saturday night, and that's the game of choice. I used to have that book.

actually i don't know how to play poker, and things like gambling can never happen in my house. My father has an self-experience about gambling that make he teaches us and stay us away from poker and other gambling stuff. That time he was young, and he has just got married to my mom. the day after marriage, he said he wanted to change the life and he wanted a good life to my mom, and kids, mean us. He gambled the first time in his life, right after the marriage, and all the money that my parents got from grandmom gave, gone. And he was angry with himself, he was so poor, and he worked so hard 30 years after that day. And now he can be proud of it I think. I wanna teach him computer this time when I am back. I never want to gamble. this may be the feeling of failure brings.

We don't gamble for real money. We just play with poker chips. I don't believe in any gambling either. I won't even buy a lottery ticket or raffle ticket. We just play with friends who feel the same way and with family members. I'm sure your father learned a GOOD lesson. Bless his heart. He did learn it though and that's good.

My dad taught me how to play poker when I was quite young. We used matches for wagers, never being able to keep much money on hand. Mostly we played five card stud, then later seven card stud.
I only heard about Texas hold em when I woke up a few nights when I had left the TV on and they were playing a tournament. I never could understand how that went. As far as the other poker games you mentioned I don't think I have ever heard of them.
I, of course, know what bridge is although I have never played it but I used to be pretty good at pinochle but I don't remember how to play anymore. I also have a vague recollection of playing canasta.
My card game of choice now is spades which I am told is similar to bridge. And this is one game I am very good at.

My family and I played poker when I was young. It was always for fun , just betting chips. When video games came out in the early 80s, there was this one game for Intellivision where I could play poker games against the computer. I liked playing that a lot.

Lots of people play poker online. I would like to know of a good site where you can play with other people, not just the computer.
