Mylotters the debate rages on, land line or cell phone! People get up in arms about this one.
Sometimes I think this one has to do more with a generational thing. Many who grew up with cells don’t see the need for a land line. I am in the grey zone, age wise. I aught to be with those who still have a land line…but I do not. Firstly, I feel strongly about the safety of having a cell with you, but that can be achieved by a pay as you talk prepaid phone with limited minutes. I don’t feel the need to pay for 2 phones, when I can just have a cell. I am going to have that one anyways. Say I get hurt at home. I’d be more likely to have a cell in my pocket than be within reach of a landline. I also like the ability to use my phone for more than just a phone. It has become an appointment calendar, pc, stereo, remote, gps, alarm clock etc. I don’t feel the need to always respond. I have it so that after a certain time at night, it goes in quite mode and will only ring if someone calls. Texts won’t even ding
I guess I just don’t get the whole land line thing. But some do. Where are you on the cell vs. land wars?
Edit:Below are reasons given that totally make sense to me on why one would have a landline and a cell:
no cell reception at home
fax machine
needed for net/broadband connection

@Susan2015 glad it was lower, I just don't understand why some people want to hold on to it. I am sure they have reasons, lol, I just don't get them

@Jessicalynnt Because Europe, as a matter of fact, is not unified at all, we have the same currency, period.

@LadyDuck I think I might be able to get international calling cards and use them on my cell, which is how I would call overseas on a landline if I had one. Although anymore I use teamspeak, or skype for all overseas calls. Since that is free! (well free ish aside from sub prices, which we pay anyways)

@Jessicalynnt Yep with subscription model for Skype, it just makes sense to use it. I rarely use my cell to call anyone these days.

I always have cell reception at home, You can set up your computer as a fax, I have risebroadband and do not need a landline phone. I am in the senior age group but I see no need for a landline phone any more with my cell phone always being with me a landline would just be an added expense that i don't want or need.

I use my printer to scan and then email whatever I would fax for the most part, and yeah, I saw it as an added expense that was totally a waste, for that money I would rather pay for a Netflix subscription and some popcorn!

I've had a friend tell me she has a landline because she can hear better on it @Jessicalynnt I have no problem hearing most people

I prefer my land line for both giving and receiving calls - I dislike being called on my cell phone when I'm out often by people unwilling to grasp that they are ringing at impractical times, such as when I'm getting on or off buses or surrounded by heavy noisy traffic.

@Jessicalynnt I often ignore mine too and nearly always keep it on silent

oh I just don't respond if it is a bad time. Like I wont even pick up. My family knows to text me if it's urgent I actually talk to them. Just because I have the cell on me does not mean I am at the worlds beck and call.

@boiboing gotcha, most people don't realize but most phone now is at least in part transmitted over the net.

@Jessicalynnt voice over internet protocol. I guess it's like secure voice Skype. The company removed all the landlines and gave us headsets. The system sort of works most of the time.

so why both? Since you have the cell, what is the land providing for you that the cell is not? (totally curious!)

@KristenH we just made the cells the main and then only contacts, charging can be an issue, but I plan on getting a hand cranked flashlight for emergencies! They make them now that can also charge a cell

@Jessicalynnt No worries. I use the cell at least once a month for emergencies, since I have free minutes. I do text my brother and cousin to check on them. I mainly use my cell 25% of the time. But it's good to have a cell, when you lose electricity due to a power outage. The land line is my main line for contact.

I still have a land line and not the battery operated one that is portable that you can take around the house. LOL its the one with a cord but I can take it anywhere in the house even outside because I have a 100ft cord on it. Cells are great to have in a emergency. If you want to reach me you better call the landline you will get a quicker response from me.

the battery operated ones go out when the power goes down as the base still needs power to work anyways

I am in the same gray area as you, I have both and I think as you have to have to have a landline to have internet you might as well have a phone plugged into it as it doesn't normally cost you anything just to have it and at least if your mobile breaks you have a back up x

I hadn't thought about land line net when I wrote this, and that is totally a good reason. We have cable net, and before that satellite net, so I haven't had to have phone net in years!

@Jessicalynnt I think most people in the UK have landline broadband. I haven't had anything else. The signal where I live is rubbish so I have been told to look at satellite internet I didn't even know it existed until then x
