Not necessary. if the woman is worth it then surely no mind going on knees. but we know most women are not even close to that. and we just get married for stability.

Be unique and no need to be copy old things/traditions. but respect those traditions, if there is a new way/idea of proposing, then give it a try but make sure it ends up good :)
