Eventful Evening

My little man x

So yesterday I got home from work at about 3pm, my partner was sat playing on his Playstation and Vinnie was in his room napping, everything was nice and peaceful, I asked Stewart how long Vinnie had been sleeping and he said since 1pm, this isn't unusually long for him and he hadn't had the best night the night before so I wasn't concerned. We were meant to be driving back to Cardiff that night for the weekend to see some friends and family so I thought I would leave him to sleep until we were ready to go then get him up. So we were all ready to go at about 4pm and he started stirring on the monitor so I thought that was great timing and went to get him up. When I turned his light on he was sat up in his cot and looked happy enough but he was bright red like a post box red, it looked like sunburn but obviously we are in the middle of winter and it is freezing out so it couldn't have been sunburn. I went to pick him up and his skin was so hot it felt like it was on fire it was almost uncomfortable to touch so I can't imagine how he felt. I shouted down to Stewart to come up as I was concerned by this point. He came up and being a typical man couldn't see anything wrong with him until I pointed out how red he was. He then touched his skin and realised how hot he was, he ran down stairs to get the thermometer while I stripped him off. His temperature was 40.1C (104.18F). I was pretty concerned at this point and was thinking of Phoning NHS direct but I knew they would tell me to give him calpol first so I did this and was going to wait a little while and see if it came down. We took him downstairs in just his nappy and let him play for a bit but he was really grumpy and kept crying and wanting cuddles which is not like him he is normally wild and very independant. Then he started breathing funny like panting and then taking really short sharp breaths. At this point I rang NHS direct and went through everything that was happening, he put me through to a Paramedic who decided we needed an ambulance, I think he decided this because while he was on the phone Vinnie went really limp and although he was responsive he wasn't right at all he was just laid across his Dad's lap with his arms and legs hanging down. About 10 minutes later I got a phone call from the ambulance dispatch and she re questioned everything I had told the paramedic and because he wasn't floppy anymore she cancelled the ambulance and asked me to take him to the emergency GP. So we got an appointment for the emergency GP and by the time we got there Vinnie was fine, he was still a bit moody but his temperature had gone back down to 38.5 and he wasn't crying anymore. His breathing was normal. The doctor said we were right to take him in and said to keep a close eye on him and keep giving him calpol to control his temperature. He got really hot again at about midnight last night but felt ok when he got up this morning. It is crazy how quickly little ones can change like that, I was really worries at one point now I think he's just got a bad cold. We don't know why his temp spiked so high so I'm still a little worried about him but it seems to have just been one of those strange things. Have you ever experienced this sort of thing with your little ones ?

I have two observations/comments concerning this: 1) children are very resilient, and their immune systems can kick into high gear to quickly defeat any virus/cold they may catch. And 2) fever is the body's natural response mechanism to kill viruses, and I imagine the fact that he had such a high fever killed off the virus in his body and allowed him to recover quickly! So many times we want to eliminate fevers immediately when we're sick, but sometimes it is best to let a fever run its course to help the body's immune system do it's job. But you were right to be concerned, due to how high the fever was, the shallow breathing, and the limp body. But glad to hear he is already getting better!

He is fine today, he just has a runny nose and a slightly high temperature nothing at all concerning just normal toddler stuff. You're explanation makes perfect sense, it's funny how I learned most of this stuff in University (I studies Nursing when I was 18) but when it comes to my own child it all goes out of the window x

@shellyjaneo I totally understand what you're saying! I raised two children myself, and anytime they got sick I almost always went into a panic, even though i knew what needed to be done to take care of them!

So sorry to read about your little guy not feeling so well. Glad that he is better now. My son had a very hot body and covered with red spots when he was about 8 months old and I took him to the ER and it turned out that he had the "24 hours measles". The day after it was all gone. Bu scary moments, aren't they? Your little guy is so cute!

Thanks he is a cutie isn't he (if I do say so myself). That must have been horrible they don't half make you panic don't they. I'm glad your son was ok. Vinnie seems loads better today just a bit of a snuffly nose x

It is great that you did not take any action with agog. In fever of small child, we can only use calpol without doctor's advice.

Goodness, this would have been worrying. But you're right. Children can get sick so quickly. Glad he is better now.

@shellyjaneo I'm sorry to hear that. I had tonsilitis quite a lot as a child and eventually had them out. They don't recommend that anymore from what I've heard. I do hope he is better soon - for all your sakes.

Well he was better then bad again then better and no I'm not sure. My sister is a doctor as she thinks he might have tonsilitis so I am taking him back to the doctors tomorrow to see what they say. The poor little man is not happy at all x

@JudyEv He's been to the doctors today and they said it might be tonsilitis but he just needs to ride it out, he's been worse again today, I don't think there is much chance of him going to Nursery tomorrow so I am going to have to take time off work and it is only my second week it's not going to look good but they will have to understand he is really poorly. It's horrible because he looks so scared like he doesn't know whats going on and there's nothing I can do to make him feel better :(
