A Christmas wish list

I don't have a wish list . I do want a dog, but I am okay if I don't get one this Christmas. I wouldn't really want anyone to give me a wish list, sometimes this can get beyond my budget. I prefer to give people something that they can use, but not very expensive. I really don't like this commercial aspect of Christmas, I don't know about you.. being forced to buy presents for people is not a nice thing .. A gift should be given out of love. It shouldn't be from a wishlist. That is my opinion of course.. you may differ from me in your opinion. Would it be easier for you if people gave you a wish list for their Christmas gifts?

I wouldn't want people giving me a wish list although I don't mind if they give me suggestions. I refuse to give really expensive gifts at Christmas. That's not what it is about.

@JudyEv You sound very practical.. I often take suggestions from friends and family and that is how I get them gifts.. but a wish list sounds a bit too much for me.

No i don't like to be given a wish list . What is that a command that it is what they like ? What if it's too expensive . I think we are both practical persons.

@sofssu How irresponsible of the daughters to still give their mother a wish list when in fact they are already working and have money of their own . It should have been that it's the turn of the mother to give them her wish list .

@SIMPLYD My sister in law told me she got a wish list from her daughters and she woukld be poorer after Christmas.. that sounded really rude to me.. The girls should be buying their mother gifts now since they are working not the other way around.. I don't like the idea of a wish list.

Why don't you visit the humane society in your community and pick yourself out a dog? I don't know about the list. Is it spoiling the person to get them things on the list? Is it making it too easy for people? I don't know.

@celticeagle I tried everything.. but it seems I don't have the right dog yet. I am with you on that line of thinking. It just seems to kill the surprise out of the gift.

I prefer getting a wish list from our 2 sons as I don't want to buy things that they already have.

@marlina Don't children al ways leave broad hints? .. like my little son sings all I want for Christmas is fluffy little dog.. I do realize that this would save effort of having to look for something suitable.

I do not like a wishlist because some do not care to put in the list too expensive items. I appreciate when people let me know what they would like, books, clothes, accessories, at least I have a guidance.

@LadyDuck I guess all of us appreciate subtle hints. I made it clear to my aunt that I would like one of her wicker baskets - she sells them. That way she wouldn't have to run around to get something for me considering her age.

@sofssu I also suggested what I would like, at least I hope not to receive things that I would never use.

I don't like the commercial side of christmas... and I would not like to be given a wish list... a broad hint may be helpful... but I like to do the choosing.... I hope you get a dog... have you a particular breed in mind... would you get him from a shelter... ??

@sueznewz2 Its nice to know that you don't like to be given a wish list. Like you I always welcome hints and chose the gifts myself. I hope too. we have done the round of shelters.. only disabled/ sick dogs are available at the moment.. I cannot take on that kind of a burden now.I would be happy to have a shih tzu but any nice dog would do too.

We always ask our loved ones what they would like. It is better to get something useful , rather than something that never sees the light of day. They won't let you adopt a dog or cat this close to Christmas in the UK. They had so many puppies dumped in the new year . So many people bought their loved ones a surprise puppy with no idea what puppies do , like chew , poo on the carpet ect.

Those poor pups and probably kittens too. No one should buy someone else a pet unless they know that person is ready, willing and able to take proper care of it.

I ignore wish lists as they usually involve gifts way outside my budget - they get the gifts I pick for them myself.

@arthurchappell I like that attitude.. I would possibly do that too.. I sometimes prefer to leave a gift voucher in the box .. so people can spend them as they wish.. but the personal choice aspect would be lost in such a gift.

I like having a list to fall back on if I don't get an idea of what to buy. My family didn't put expensive things on their lists.

Actually truth be told, I think a 'wish list' is a bit rude. I was always one who believed in it's the thought that mattered. To have someone give you a wish list is like dictating what they want you to get them.

That makes sense. I don't make much on SS so I give my friends my time and will help them shop if they'd like.

I do ask the grandsons for suggestions for things they need but that is it. I enjoy finding things that really fit the person I am buying for. I usually shop all year as I travel along.

@sofssu And they are unique which I really like doing. It isn't the amount that you spend. For my granddaughters I usually look for unique holders for their gift cards like trinket boxes, little silk pouches, Museums are great for this sort of thing
@sofssu (23662)

@BelleStarr I am sure that you give the best of gifts.. I love little knick knacks picked up from different places. This also reduces the burden of having to buy gifts for everyone at the same time.

I don't like the idea of a wish list either - it just seems like asking for things. There weren't even lists for weddings when I was young - if you got 6 toasters it was too bad.

@jaboUK LOL we never have a wish list for weddings too here.. People just accept what is given.. Most people give gift vouchers or cash.

If it is someone who is a co-worker, then yes I would prefer a list. Just because I worked with someone didn't mean that I knew what they liked and didn't like. Now, if it's family, no I wouldn't want a list.

This is how my family always did it. I liked buying something I knew they would use instead of guessing. It may have seemed we were just doing each other's shopping and wrapping it is Christmas paper, but it was fun.

A wish list removes the excitement. If I know the content of the gift box, I would not be much excited in opening it. Besides, I think it is better to give the giver the liberty to give whatever he can afford and whatever comes from his heart.

@salonga So true. The excitement of opening a gift wrap is to discover what is in there.. when the surprise element is lost the art of gift giving would be lost too.

I am not celebrating Christmas, and I do not want to spend money on buying gifts. I hope that nobody gives me anything too. I have made known my stand and I will stand by my decision.

@scheng1 I wish I can do that.. I want to do that as soon as the kids realize that Christmas is not about gifts. I am working on that.. after which I can tell everyone that I do not take gifts.

I also think that xmas is too commercialized. It is a religious celebration but most people who take part of it don't even celebrate the religious aspect.

I have my kids make a wish list every year. I don't always get them what's on the list, and never get them everything on it, but I like to have an idea of what they would like.

I am an old fastion girl, I would hate for someone to give me a wish list. One IO don't have that much money to begin with and my son comes first. My family know, that we done have that much money and are very grateful for anything that I give them.
