Is it difficult to be nice to mean people

I was watching a show that proved it is difficult to be nice to mean or rude people. A careless and impolite sales assistant handed way too much cash back to the customers.. and most people decided to pocket the extra cash and walk away., when asked they said that she was mean and impolite and they wanted her to bear the consequences of such behavior. Earlier the same girl was being cheerful and kind and almost everyone returned the extra cash she gave out in that experiment. Do you think it is difficult to be nice to rude or impolite people?

I guess most people would feel justified in getting revenge on her, but that's because they view the situation all wrong. The mean and rude person is their own worst enemy, they don't need anyone to punish them. but in keeping the money, the people who pocketed it actually did harm to themselves. They damaged their own integrity and character and so, it is better to do the right thing, even if you are doing right by a person who has done you wrong.

That's excellent advice, Anja, along with teaching us to think in a better way. I may try to remember what you said and share it with my co-workers. Do you care if I copy this to give to my manager?

@MarshaMusselman S'ok by me. I stole it right from the Bible - if not word for word. Socrates said that knowledge is virtue and ignorance is vice, meaning that if people realized they didn't benefit from their wrong deeds and understood the detriment to themselves, they would be more virtuous. Jesus was even more upfront and demanding - forgive your enemies, even when they don't deserve it. And it's not easy to bless those that curse you. But it's what Jesus did for us. We really haven't got any right to offense, because He suffered all offense in our defense.

@Rollo1 That is the perfect answer , but I am not perfect after all. I would have reported her though I wouldn't have pocketed the change. I hate being made to wait and being pushed and tugged around by a sales assistant. She certainly would have not got my sympathy in that situation.

Rude or kind, I would never take what I don't own. I have to give the extra money back.

It is after a certain point. I was in Customer Service for nearly thirty years and you learn early that you can get a lot more done with a little honey or some humor that meeting them with the same attitude.

You always get a better result if you are kind and sympathetic no matter what you may think of the people yourself.

@celticeagle Actua;lly the lady was a nice person.. she was told to act mean. just for the experiment. When she was being herself and handing extra change almost everyone returned the change. You are right about having the right attitude .. it always oils the wheels.

I will return money regardless of the attitude of the cashier. I think we should not profit from anyone who is trying to make a living, and to provide for their families. If the mean persons happen elsewhere, I will not bother about them.

@scheng1 I agree with you about the money part completely. Would you be happy with a mean person who makes you wait and perhaps even says some rude things to you? Like whoever has doughnuts for breakfast and stuff like that.. That is not her business at all.

@WorDazza Hmm tough thing to do.. Hats off to you if you can do it.. I hate to be kept waiting at the desk.. ( which is one of the reasons why I hate shopping) I wonder if they would even get the point.. I often say 'bless you' to someone who is mean.. but they mutter some more and walk away.

Yes it is really quite hard. Kindness begets kindness and sadly it is the same rule with rudeness although of course we should never repay evil with evil.

I don't think their response was because it is more difficult rather a lack of caring as much about the rude person.

@Namelesss I don't know about that.. For me its is tough to be nice to someone who is shoddy about their job. I wouldn't pocket the extra cash.. but I guess I would say a word or two that wouldn't be so nice.

Yes definitely its hard to be nice to a rude person .. but most of the time , rude people are those who does not have love in there hearts :) perhaps being nice to them is like sowing some tiny seeds of love in their hearts .. you might become a blessing to them :)

Some people who are mean or rude may not be in purpose or have a clear realization of their behavior and I think such people can be forgave.

Yes it's very hard to be nice to rude people. I have a brother in law who I don't like at all, he is mean to me in a very slick way. I am not mean in return I just clam up usually. And leave when visiting as soon as possible.

Maybe it isn't a revenge. Some didn't return the cash because it is way too embarrassing to do something good to a mean person.I mean, the sales assistant is insulting me, so it makes me feel weird to be nice to him though I am not going to revenge him.

@Waiiii That is not what they said.. almost all who kept the cash said that she did not deserve to be treated nice. But I do see your point.. I wonder if anyone felt taht way.
