How Frequently are you paid at work?

United States
December 12, 2015 6:06am CST
I suppose I am feeling curious this morning. I've been with the company I work for since 2011. We get paid once a week. When I first started I did not get paid the first week but the hours accrued to the next week, my first paycheck there. I've been with companies that have paid me weekly, and some that have paid me every two weeks. I've had jobs that gave bonuses, and others where I received tips or gratuity. I have never lived alone. I've lived with friends, and I've lived with family. I've paid rent but it was never very much. I don't pay rent currently as I live with family. My contribution is buying necessities and cooking and cleaning. Here in the states you pay rent every month. I know in some countries the frequency you pay rent is different. A lot of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, trying to make every cent count.

I am paid biweekly and my husband is paid weekly. He makes a lot more than I do, but my checks are bigger than his because I'm paid for 2 weeks of work. My check is actually only $200 bigger than one of his 1 week checks, LOL! I pay the larger of our bills, the mortgage and the car payments. His money buys the gas and groceries and other living expenses, and he'll cover the smaller bills like the internet and insurance.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yeah, I like the size of my paycheck.. I just don't like how it's gone the very same day I get it. I pay the bills and the babysitter, then I put the rest of the debts and credit card. I also throw $5 or so into savings every payday so I guess you could say I'm left with some money to my name, but I don't allow myself to touch it. Hubby's left over money is for spending... but we rarely have much left over from his money, and of course he now has to put some money on the credit card too as we ran that up pretty high.

I have gotten so used to the weekly paycheck if my job ever decided to change it up I don't know what I would do. When I worked as a banquet server my paychecks came in bi-weekly and usually ended up being around $800 to $1000. I always felt rich being single with very few worries. o

@ScribbledAdNauseum twice per week you'd get $800-1000 thats serious coin no way would a banquet server earn that here. did that include tips?...i've heard american people are generous with regards to tipping.

here we pay rent mostly monthly and most companies pay monthly. I've always been paid monthly and don't know of anyone here who is paid weekly.

I feel as if it would stress me out a lot more to be paid only once per month. I can see the good in it though as it would teach people to be more spend conscious.

We get our salary once in a month on the last working day of the month and salary is paid for 30 days, irrespective of number of days in a month.

I suppose it all evens out, right? You don't work every day of the month anyway.

We get paid once a month. That is the norm in the country. I think even fast food workers get paid once a month. For many of us residents, we own the apartment we live in. In fact, more than 90% of the citizens and permanent residents own our own places. The mortgage payment is once a month too.

@ScribbledAdNauseum It gets worse. Most private apartments come with just 99 years lease, and the mortgage is usually 30 to 35 years. They have to pay a monthly maintenance cost between $300 to $500.

For temporary jobs, I was paid weekly whereas a full time employee, I was paid bi-weekly. I loved the weekly checks though!

@ScribbledAdNauseum Eek! I was paid check. But, my boyfriend worked at an agency before with that method prepaid debit card. It was a hassle!

I have never worked through a temp agency before. I am not sure if it's changed but I've had friends who have and they were paid on a prepaid debit card type thing. It cost money to get money out, and to check the balance.

Provided it is sufficient enough, I suppose it doesn't matter. DO you like freelance?

@ScribbledAdNauseum honestly it's all I can do. I can't keep a full time job because of my agoraphobia. So I do that. Plus I take on as many side jobs that I am able to do. :-)

In my country some jobs pay every month and others pay every week. There are even some jobs that pay by the day, but they are usually occational jobs.

I know we have jobs that pay by the day here but like you said those are usually occasional jobs or odd jobs. Monthly? I could not deal with that.

My sister wanted to be a housewife at one time but when it came down to it they would not have been able to afford it.

Most of the jobs I've had paid every two weeks. I had one job that paid once a month - the military, and Social Security is once a month. I've also had one job that paid twice a month, not every two weeks. Rent has always been the same, the first of the month.

I don't know why it slipped my mind that social security only pays out once a month.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I get my check this week, which will be good because then I can determine if I have enough to get Pip taken care of after the bills are paid. I've done my best to save what I could from the last check. I just hope it's enough. As it is because I have her surgery to take care of there won't be any Christmas shopping for me.

I work freelance and so does my husband so we get paid at weird times. Trust me I have wished so often to have that steady pay check. Our bills are all monthly.
