Department Stores Way Under-Staffed This Season

Is it just me or are you noticing less store help this Christmas season?
I went to a big department store around 2pm on a Thursday afternoon to avoid the weekend crowds. I did expect to wait in line, but lines were very long at the few registers that were open. I was surprised to see the woman in front of me having children's clothing rung up in the men's department as no one was at that register.
The staff they had was poorly trained as well. When I checked my receipt, I noticed an extra item on it. The sales woman rung up a sweater that was laying on the counter that was not mine. Good thing I caught it.
When I asked for gift boxes for my items, I was told to go get them myself at another counter. I had to wait in another six-people line, half who were also looking for boxes. When I saw another sales person in the department and asked for boxes, he shrugged and said the woman at the register would help me and walked off. It's just common sense and customer courtesy that every station have gift boxes.
That wasn't the end of it-- when I finally walked out the door, the security alarm went off! The woman who rung up my items did not take off all the security tags. And yes, you guessed it, I had to wait in line again to get them taken off. I complained the whole time I was waiting.
Her response? Go up to the third floor and ask to speak to a manager! Right, like I'm going to be inconvenienced any further and surely have to wait in another line.
How is the store help in your area at the big department stores?

As usual, WalMart (the only southern way to shop, heehee) is drastically understaffed. Don't get me wrong, they have plenty of people putting stuff away, and some of them even know enough to help you. But the kicker I have noticed, all year around, that for a department store as huge as WalMart and has, who knows, how many million employees.....only has 3 or 4 registers open during a holiday season?

Imagine the Postal Office..... they are expected to have tons of people shipping for the holidays and only 2 cashiers opened!!

I went to a grocery store yesterday. It was packed, and there were only two registers open. One of them was the "12 items or less" lane. UGH

@Dalane I guess they need to step it up a bit. I will probably go to a different store next time.

I am definitely experiencing under-staffed department stores lately as well! Literally, I am guiding them to ring up my transaction because many are clueless! It doesn't help them either because lines would be building up. I have patience, but if they start doing my transaction incorrectly or for instance ring up an extra item like you caught - I would be very upset for the inconvenience especially if I didn't notice until after.
You should have not waited in line to remove security sensors though. That isn't your fault and I would go straight to the front of the line and demand them to remove it. And, if they told you to go the manager - I would ask for the manager to come down!!

I always check my purchases before I leave the store because they seem to make so many mistakes either wrong price or an extra item that was not mine, I would also have told the cashier to call the manager and have him/her come down there as there is a problem.

@Marcyaz I also learn to check my sensors too! Because there was a time, I bought a dress to attend an event and when I took out the dress to wear, the sensors were still attached to the dress, which resulted me in having to wear a different dress as there wasn't enough time for me to drive to the store to remove the sensors!!
Very inconvenient, especially since the sensor issue was a few times. If one in a blue moon understandable.

@LisaSteinmetz That's a good idea, but after so many times of having the sensor on - I now always ask them to double check or I check myself before leaving the cashier! The sensors never beep at the door for me.

Well when we went grocery shopping the other evening we also stopped at walmart to pick up an item my son had ordered, theer was no one there and we had a heck of a time finding someone to help him then we were looking for something in the electronics department and there was no one there either. How can you run a store at Christmas with such limited staff. glad I don't go in there often.

Personally I haven't noticed any problems like that in the stores I've shopped... but then again I spend most of my time just browsing and very rarely making any purchases. I did make a purchase yesterday though and got the help I needed. There was a boy stocking the shelves and I asked him a question about the sizes. Although he couldn't help me, he did at least try. The line to check out was not long either. Everything seemed to go just fine.

I wonder why the department stores do not hire more people.
They must have lost a lot of money because some people just do not have the patience to wait.
They rather do without the items.
Has the economy improved so much that workers are hard to get now?

As more workers want the minimum wage to go up, stores will suffer to make up the money difference. Are we willing to pay more for our purchases and service? No. Do we think the minimum wage should be higher? Yes. Then personnel will be cut to meet the budget. Customer services will suffer.

In my city, they have raised the minimum wage already. The result is that the stores are giving workers less hours. The companies still have a payroll budget regardless of how much they are paying workers. Even so, the stores are losing money because people are shopping online.

I haven't done any shopping yet. I always feel forced to go out and spend, and I don't have a lot of extra money. I am buying because I feel I have to, or I will be a grinch. I would just as soon give everyone food of some kind, like specialty cakes, maybe some nice soaps. I have a granddtr that is just two, and she runs from thing to thing. She loves her mother's cell phone, as she likes playing her little games on it. She is obsessed with it. Anything I get her will be shoved in a corner, like the tricycle for her birthday that I think she rode twice, briefly. I am stumped as to what to get her.

It doesn't make sense to have people waiting in line like that. They know it will make some people not shop there anymore. And when you don't want help there they are asking you if you need help.
