Here we are, this is the time of the year when we indulge in food and sweets.
Before consuming sugar, you should know that, according to US researchers, the sugar is eight time more addictive than cocaine.
Just like the drug, if we consume too much sugar, we will be unable to get rid of this habit.
According to the same researchers, there are other foods that are addictive, among them, the ones considered "most dangerous" are:
Sweet Fatty Foods (like Cheesecake, cookies and so on)
Sweet sodas
Refined sugar
Humans had always consumed fats and sugar, it's is how food is processed in our days that make them dangerous.

A timely reminder.... how easy it is to over indulge... and then how difficult it is to put a stop to it after the season... and get back on track to healthy eating .. there is a saying... A moment on the lips ... a lot longer on the hips.... not that i want to be hum-buggy about it, because I shall definitely be indulging... and the consequences....

I know someone that drinks soda all day long like mt dew and pepsi and nothing else. They are skinny but i'm sure it's probably going to cause them problems later in life. I drink 1 soda a day and have cut down on my sweets. I used to eat alot of chocolate in a day but now i hardly have any. If I do though it's dark chocolate as i hear that's better for you.

I have the problem all the time, for once one holiday or even is over with, the candy comes out onto the shelves for the next one. I can skip the chocolate, but I do like candy. I can go for a few months without any and then have a bag of something and want more until I make myself quit again.
If I eat too much there's a possibility I'll get a migraine, so that helps me refrain a bit longer than I would otherwise, that and not wanting to gain back the weight I lost last year.

I didn't seem to have much trouble giving up my sugar addiction a few years ago when I switched to a diet that consisted of healthy foods, such as nuts, fruits and vegetables. However, when I tried to give up caffeine, I got tremendous headaches from the withdrawal.

caffeine from coffee? how many cups do you drink everyday?

@hereandthere These days, I limit myself to no more than two cups of coffee per day. But it wasn't the coffee that was so bad, it was all the soda I was drinking throughout the day. I tried to quit drinking soda altogether, and that's when I got the headaches. Plus, since I was drinking so much soda, I wasn't drinking enough water and so I was dehydrated on top of that. Nowadays, I don't drink that much soda at all. Other than my two cups of coffee, I mostly drink water all day long.

I hate that nearly everything we eat that's on the shelves has some sort of sugar in it - it's like we can't get away from it. I love my share of sweets too, but have been trying not to shovel it in. It's difficult - but yes, we need to be seriously aware of all the sugar!!

@LadyDuck It is in everything - I suppose it ensures that the public will love the taste of the product and buy more. But it's all so bad for our health though - and they don't seem to care. Yes, I think there should be stricter laws about sugar!

I never drink any kind of soda, I drink carbonated water. I do like a cookie once in a while but I am more addicted to salt than sugar, I prefer pretzels and popcorn to most sweets.

@LadyDuck I have found that often you can cut down quantity, and its not just that, flour can be mixed with coconut flour or almond!

I am not that keen on Cheesecake as I find it too cloying. American cookies are far to sweet for me but I do like chocolate.

@garymarsh6 There is one thing that I cannot understand, why people love Nut... (the chocolate spread). It's too sweet, gummy, with a powdery taste. It would be ten time healthier to melt a bar of dark chocolate and use it as a spread.

@LadyDuck I am not at all surprised to hear that sugar is addictive. It seems the more sugar you do ingest the more you want. I have found since I have cut down my consumption of cake, ice cream, ect. that fruits are tasting sweeter to me.

I have found the same thing. Fruits are so delicious and it's a shame to ruin their flavour by eating too many sugary foods.

I have a sweet tooth, as everyone on the board can see from my new photograph. Cookies are made for special occasions, as I avoid store bought cookies. This way I know exactly how much sugar was eaten and it means I'm going to exercise more that week.

@LadyDuck I agree really unhealthy. Its a shame to see so many products on the shelves that people regularly eat have an ingredient list that is huge. Some companies are slowly making changes; however, the cereal companies haven't gone far enough yet.

@LadyDuck Actually I haven't given you the list. you just named muffins. Whatever is sweet I like it doesn't matter what it is, sweets, cakes, doughnuts, we indians have other sweet dishes which you might have not even heard.

Thank goodness that Stevia exists, I can have something sweet without fearing I will end up having diabetes. I bake my own cakes and cookies but they were all guilt free.

And you can bet @LadyDuck that besides all the chemicals and everything else they put in foods today that they probably have something they've added to "make" people "want" to eat their product. At one time television commercials had subliminal messages flash across the screen that only your subconscious would pick up on. You may not have wanted to eat a hamburger but after seeing a commercial for one, you'd be heading out the door to the closest burger joint.

@JudyEv In my opinion sodas are the most dangerous. When you think that a can of soda contains the equivalent of 8 teaspoon of sugar and you see how many sodas people drink during the day, you can easily understand why the diabetes is increasing all over the world.
