The Wave of Foreclosures Seems Unabated

I guess it is my simple thinking that allowed me to believe that once the recession was over, so would the enormous number of home and business foreclosures.
I have a friend who is having two investment properties foreclosed, and I visit people in their homes who are also sometimes waiting to be thrown out due to foreclosure.
Shops near me, in shopping centers especially, seem to be struggling to keep businesses. There are two strip malls with several shops that have about half of the spaces empty. One services a mixed income area, while the other services a higher income area and has tremendous traffic, as it is a very busy intersection of two major arteries.
I seem to note that there are other pockets of problems, as well. These strip malls service Mom and Pop businesses, and perhaps that is the problem. It seems Mom and Pop have been laid to rest, to make way for chain stores, chain restaurants, and chain everything else.
I will miss Mom and Pop. Very much.

We have had an expansion of retailers here in our area as well. None makes much sense as I know I cannot afford to support much more than the grocery stores, thrift stores, and a few discounted retailers. We have a very high end department store here they are building. I am curious if it will be a success. Most people I know live check to check and simply can not afford to drop a hundred(s) on any one item that isn't essential (like vehicle, home, groceries). The chain stores do make it hard for the Mom and Pop's to compete on pricing and volume. I also agree there are several stores that lay empty with "lease" or "sale" signs on them that have been sitting empty for years. But yet these new chains come in and demolish our woods when they could demo these empty buildings or remodel to their specifications.... makes no sense. One such store has done that here in our area, I visited another location and was not impressed with the store. And truly heartbroken over the lost woodland that is now developed.

It will be a sad day when all the Mom and Pop businesses have gone.
