why does e-bay charge a percentage in shipping your items you sale?

I could not find an answer on e-bay to ask them but when selling an item they charge so much and if you charge for shipping they charge for that to? shipping is not what you earn ? if is paid for but not earned money for a sale? I sold an item and by the time I paid the e-bay fee and paypal . I think I may had made one dollar.. not really worth the sell ..to mail an item they charge me a fee also for charging a fee for shipping?? just did not make sense.

@goldenteardrops Of course not. But that's not the only thing unfair about dealing with those crooks.
