I Am Not A Hockey Fan But What's Up With The Fighting

I don't watch hockey. Never have never will. My husband is clicking that remote control and stopped on a Chicago Wolves game. So there are 2 umpires or whatever they call them in hockey, standing around watching 2 hockey players beat each other about the face. Now I'm not sure how long this went on, but the face? The worst place to get hit or injured is the face. Ouch!! Well this went on for some time, 20 30 seconds or so. And then it was stopped. So what's the rule here. They can punch for a timed period of time. Or they each get an agreed upon number of punches or what? Is this behavior allowed because the crowd expects to see it and the powers that be want to make sure the crowd keeps coming back? I'm not dishing hockey it's just me trying to understand. If I want to see punching I could always watch boxing.

We used to say, "I went to a fight, and a hockey game broke out." I think protocol is to separate the players when they go down. The umps are called "referees," I think.

And that why I hate sports and will never watch it either on TV or in person. I'm not big on violence and so far that's all sports (other than golf) seems to create.

Well I have to admit I like football a lot, and baseball. But they are not allowed to just keep punching while the umps stand right next to them and let it continue.

Sorry but I don't like either of those sports so I haven't a clue @fishtiger58 the most I'll do is sometimes watch a swim competition if another cutie like Mark Spitz is a competitor.

Okay, the fighting is an integral part of the game. And in a game that involves "checking" which is literally, slamming the other player up against the boards, you have to see that tempers run high. But they rarely fight much anymore and now they all wear those helmets. Ruined the game. Funny, I was just watching a video on Facebook the other day - Mike Milbury of the Bruins going up into the stands and beating a fan with his own shoe. Greatest show on earth.

@fishtiger58 Refs who get involved can get hurt. I think the fan was beating him first. And he later went on to become coach of the team.

Wow he beat a fan. That is a bit over the top. I understand it's part of the game, and I'm not criticizing the game in any way. I was just shocked mostly because the refs just stood there watching.

They are referees and there are certain things that are allowed and others are not. It is a very physical sport that is for sure.

@fishtiger58 One of my grandsons is a hockey player and I get to see it firsthand, I don't like it much either but it is part of the sport. The players have to be face to face, no checking from behind and stuff!! lol It is now clear why hockey layers are missing teeth!!

It is indeed, but not overly so. I'm not offended by it at all just was strange to me to see the refs standing an arms length away and doing nothing. In football and baseball the umps try to stop those problems right away.

LOL I wondered the same thing! I never actually watched the game properly before, but I wondered what the deal is with the fighting lol

@fishtiger58 LOL it sounds pretty funny to think they just randomly start fighting and the ref allows it!

The great thing about hockey fights is that they're seldom very dangerous. It's hard to land a good blow when standing on ice.

@fishtiger58 Yes, it's come a long way since the 'Slapshot' days but you rarely see a fight that's half as dangerous as a damned good bodycheck at high speed into the side walls. The fisticuffs are just hissy fits.

I don't like rough sports either. I don't know if there is a rule. They could break facial bones and need surgery, for pete's sake.

It is for sure, but being a non watcher of hockey, I wonder why it's allowed.

I've never watched it enough to know for sure, but what i've seen portrayed is that it's pretty normal.

I never lived where there was hockey until we came to Canada. I can't watch it because of the violence, I'm glad my kids never skated enough to get interested in the sport.

It seems that hockey attracts a lot of quick-tempered players. They also don't penalized this behavior enough. Probably because the violence is good for the rating.

Just lime with American football, the score isn't the reason people watch, it is for the brutality.

I am a football fan die hard Chicago Bears fan, I have never seen it as horribly violent, it's not fighting like with hockey. But I can understand why some people think it's violent.
