This year is will be no different to any other year for us at Christmas. My daughter and her family will come to spend the day with us. We shall be cooking Christmas dinner which will consist of Lamb and a gammon served with roast potatoes, parsnips, sprouts, carrots, peas. Pigs in blankets (Chipolata sausages with bacon wrapped around them. Stuffing and a delicious onion gravy. We sort of adopted a neighbour around 15 years ago when I saw her on Christmas day and asked her if father Christmas had visited her that morning. She said no. I asked her what she was having for dinner. She told me a boiled egg. Oh boy I said well I have news for you we have plenty of food you shall come to us for lunch and she has done ever since. We moved to a different town so on Christmas eve I go pick her up and take her back home on New Years day after all the celebrations. She is more or less part of the family now and joins us for all celebrations ie christmas weddings birthdays etc. I do tease her though as she likes a drink. She is 85 now. I buy her a bottle of baileys and then I sit her in the corner with a glass and the bottle and tell her that's you sorted now! After all this time I don't think we would enjoy it without her company. It does not cause us any bother because there is always plenty of food around and it stops her from being alone. It must be horrible not having any family. The family usually go off to Church while I stay home and cook dinner. Easy peasey. When they come home from church we have a tipple of sherry. This can be quite strong on an empty stomach but it helps work up an appetite. Have you ever adopted an old lady or neighbour like this?

That is so sweet of you! I would love to do that for someone but right now I don't know anyone that needs to be adopted. Not yet anyway.

I am sure this old lady loves you Gary, what a wonderful gesture to invite her. I have my Mom who is an old lady, she turned 94 last Sunday. So, even this year on the Christmas eve I prepare everything we need for the Christmas lunch and the morning after we go to Milan to enjoy the day with my Mother and my Niece. The niece told us that she comes to spend the Christmas Eve with us, no not to help, just to enjoy the dinner.

@LadyDuck Yes it is good to maintain our traditions Anna. It would be a shame not to uphold them.

You are lucky you don't live nearer otherwise you could be stuck in a corner with your favourite tipple too!

We do not really like turkey otherwise most people in the UK eat it. What will you have for Christmas dinner? I know you are all big on Turkeys for Thanksgiving. I wonder if there are any left come Christmas or you are all fed up of them?

Not recently but in the past I have had people at our holiday table that were alone

I think that's lovely. And easier than adopting a stray cat if you want to take her home again after the holidays.

We've often had a 'non-family' member join us for Christmas. One man became part of the family for a good few years. Christmas can be very miserable for some. Your friend must have felt so good the first time you took her in - and just as good the other times!
