A White Christmas?

All the weathermen (and women) are forecasting that we might have a white Christmas. “Might” being the pivotal word. We received about two inches (5 cm) last night.
One weatherman said we have a white Christmas about forty percent of the time. That has seemed to changed since I was a kid. Back then it was more like, “Are we going to have snow on Thanksgiving Day?” I can’t remember more than a couple of Christmases without snow.
Why is a white Christmas important? In a sense it really isn’t, but for people like me who grew up with almost every Christmas being white, Christmas just isn’t Christmas without snow. For me, snow is just part of the Christmas experience.
I will admit once Christmas is over all the snow can melt away and be gone until the next Christmas. That, too, I’ll admit has changed since I was a kid. Back then I wanted snow all winter. The air smelled so fresh after a snowstorm. I wanted to roll in the snow, play in it. Build snow forts and have snowball fights. Sleigh down the hill next to the house. Then when I got cold race into the house and have a piping hot cup of cocoa, wrapping my cold hands around the hot cup to warm them.
Yes, my feeling towards snow has changed over the years but my feelings towards a white Christmas hasn’t. Let it snow until Christmas–then the snow can go to the mountain and stay there for the rest of the winter.

@RichardMeister We've got compact gunk on our road. Even with studded tires I am not confident about going to town.

This morning the road next to my place was pretty icy but they have plowed it and now it's basically just wet.

@sallypup I can understand. I do not use studded tires. I use all season tires and have them siped. I have never put my car in the ditch or even gotten stuck. I turned on a road one day by mistake and found myself at a 90º corner just before an ice packed hill. No way to get a run at it. I could see where many cars had spun out trying to make the hill. I thought, "this isn't going to be pretty." To my total surprise my car walked up that hill like it was dry pavement. And, no, my car is not all wheel drive. It's front wheel drive.

We are supposed to have a big snowstorm coming in this afternoon. But tomorrow it's supposed to warm up to 40º and rain. Then it's snow or snow/rain mix or plain rain each day until Christmas. So it's certainly a wait and see situation.

I agree on the snow thing. Just enough to make it pretty, but safe on the roads, and it can go away the day after Christmas.

I suppose we are all used to what we grew up with. You had snow every year during this time. We of course never had snow, but I seem to recall many more grayer days, that eventually led to continuous rainy days. Later the sunnier, warmer winter days became the norm. I always thought it would be so cool to have at least one day of waking up to white - Christmas or not - but I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen out here.

@RichardMeister Our day seems to be sunny bright thus far. But apparently it's supposed to rain some tomorrow.
Sure we can always take a long drive to go see some snow - and staying out there is always a possibility. Hubby and I haven't gone skiing in years - he knows how to really ski - I know basics. I'm positive the kids would love it too. Oh but the moola to take such a trip - I better do a whole lot more myLotting - ha ha!
I wouldn't mind going off the freeway to find some patches of snow and taking some Hefty garbage bags to go sledding (that's what we used to do!).
Better yet, we'll all be in tow to Spokane - maybe we can tent out in your yard - ha ha! And we'll be sure to bring a Christmas tree for you!

@much2say I haven't gone skiing since the day I went skiing down the mountain on my face. No a pleasant adventure.
You could pitch a tent in my back yard but I don't think you would like it. There's about 4 inches of snow in my yard right now and there is another snowstorm coming in tonight. Then it is forecasted to get cold. One forecast calls for 7º overnight the day before Christmas. For someone who thinks 40º is freezing, just think what 7º will feel like.

@RichardMeister Oh no . We don't experience snow here in the Philippines . It's only the dry and wet season , with the dry season from March to October and this time it would be sunny on days this December.

You don't even get snow in the mountains in the Philippines, do you?
