What is atheism to most people in China or to you? I am very much interested in most how education teaches atheism or avoids religion. To make my questions complete I need to know how atheism is interrupted. I will give simple examples to explain my question so you can better understand what my question is. 1) Is atheism we don't talk about God. It is not on our list of things to talk about. 2) Is atheism a product of science study. We talk science not about religion. 3) In many parts of the world (west) and on the internet atheism is a way of thinking. We do not like religion and religious belief. Therefore atheism is our way to say we don't want belief in our life. Thank you for your educational post about China. @Syllogism @ChinaLeon

@Syllogism Thank you for the detail and your insight into my question. Not just the information but the way your words were drawn together helped me to understand much more about the Chinese culture. Still there is confusion because history is very complicated. When we just look at modern day China I still have questions. What I found interesting was how Marxist philosophy plays an important part in education and conversation but Marx was a German. I really like the "carpe diem" motto. And I really like how you are approaching this here online.

Technically speaking, the Chinese are supposed to have two beliefs: Science and Marxist philosophy(including its contemporary development). These two beliefs are what the Chinese government wants all Chinese to believe. Science are taught in China from primary schools to universities, and Marxist philosophy, as well as the thoughts of contemporary proletarian revolutionists such as Lenin, Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping, are taught from middle school to undergraduate schools. These two aspects are actually complementary(at least the Chinese textbooks indicate that). Marxist philosophy declares itself to be the scientific philosophy. And science, instead of God, is regarded as the one and only truth of all human beings by the Marxist philosophy because of its atheistic feature. The Theory of Evolution, which is still a global controversy, is strongly advocated by the Marxist philosophy because it can help support the atheism. In fact, most Chinese adults don't believe in Marxism which has become empty slogans because of the decline of socialist states and the integration of China into global community. Most Chinese, children or adults, still believe in science, but science doesn't play an important role as a religious belief in Chinese everyday life, therefore, nowadays most Chinese do not have a real religious belief. For some Chinese, "carpe diem" is their motto, and money worship also has a large amount of followers. The Taoism originated in ancient China and the Buddhism which once prevailed in China are secularized, and many temples are managed as business units and monk is a secular job now.

@Bluedoll Chinese was taught with The" Marxist philosophy" begin 1950s. The historical reason is that the Communist Party take control of China and what a communist believe is the Marxist philosophy which is founded in 1840s. So the ruler taught everybody in China to learn about Marxist philosophy. And this become the belief of every Chinese. Marx was a german and his philosophy was spreaded in Europe first. Some parties use his philosophy to start a series of violence revolution but failed. Then his philosophy come to China though Russia. At that time, I mean before 1949, the philosophy was not so popular. After World War II, the two parties fight for political power in China and the Communist party is the winner. Then the Marxist philosophy become popular in China. Until now , for morden China, the Marxist philosophy is still a mainstream belief. But more and more young people begin to change their mind because they realize that the Marxist philosophy is not a belief actually. It's just a awareness taught by the goverment. Then they regard the "Money " as their belief. Maybe what I say could help you.

First question: Actually most of Chese DO NOT have any belief. I know it's unbelievable . Some believe in Taoism , some believe in Buddhism and some believe in Christianism. But the ones have belief are minority. The deep reason is the education. The education we got when we were child is that there is no god in the world. We call it atheism. Second question: The most popular festival in China is Spring festival. It often follows Christmas Day one month or two month later according to the trational Chinese calender.( The tradional Chinese calender is written by the agriculture requirement. It tells the farmer what time to seed, what time to fertilize and what time to reap. ) And the Spring festival means the end of the old year and the beginning of the new year that we shoud fight for our life. Another festivals in China are Festival of Lanterns, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival etc. These all appear according to the trantional culture thousands years ago. ;
