The Lowest of the Low

One of the items on our Australian TV news this evening was about a woman who was stealing packages from the front porches of houses. It seems she was following a courier van. When the courier van delivered a parcel to a house, she'd pull up a few minutes later and commandeer the parcel. Many of these were Christmas presents. Unfortunately for her, some of the houses she stole from covered by CCTV so she was apprehended quite easily. But what a lowlife! If you're having parcels delivered be sure to bring them indoors as soon as you can.

We had that happen to us last year. It was crazy because it was clothing for my son and I had a hard time getting the stuff replaced before Christmas.

That is such a shame that your son's clothing was stolen. Just the sort of pressure you don't need at the last minute.

Bummer, but glad she got caught. I read about a guy who put together a really kool package for these kinds of thieves, he wrapped his dogs excrement then packaged it and sent it to himself, I just wish I knew what the thief did when he opened the stinky thing.

It doesn't take Australia long to pick up on whatever is happening in the US. We're only ever a little while behind.

It is just awful some people will stoop that low. I am home most of the time, so I bring the packages in as soon as I can. I am glad she got arrested.

@JudyEv I just read a story that happened in the neighboring State. An 18 year old who was working for UPS, was stealing packages off the porch of houses! He got caught and was made to return all the ones he had stolen. But, I think he was also getting prosecuted for theft.

That would never happen in England - if you aren't in when a package comes you have to go and collect it from the depot. That can be a pain, but it's better than someone pinching them from your doorstep.

@jaboUK It's a crazy system. Our post-master now lets us give the courier him as an address and we pick stuff up from there. Not all couriers are so difficult to get along with.

I guess that might be the next thing to come in here. We live 7kms from a Post Office and couriers won't deliver to a PO box. But they won't come off the highway to deliver to the door. They leave it with an agent in town but half the time we don't get advised that it's arrived and it is shoved off back again. Not quite as bad as being stolen.

Some people must have their own CCTV because you could see the person coming to the front door. I don't think most of these people have many brains.

@Mike197602 Heavens above! Something else I've learnt. Maybe they have them in our cities too. I'll have to take more notice. Next time I go to a front door, I'll peer up the top to see if I can see a camera :)

The nerve of some people. Nice candles but I bet they make a mess when you light them.

@JudyEv I had a similar set years ago and I kept them as well. They looked so cool. They eventually became too dusty and grotty looking which made them easy to throw out. Are you tempted to try and straighten them - carefully ??

@MsTickle No really as I have 'new' ones sitting in a box that are the same? One day these will be too dusty too and will be easy to throw out. It's strange how that happens isn't it? One day you look at them and they are just too awful - and out they go!

It is bad here in the states as well. I saw on a news show that in a certain part of California there is a special team of police that are delivering false packages to homes and then staking out the home until the thief comes to pick up the package and then they arrest them. I hope that this technique works and they catch lots of thieves.

@JudyEv Tracking devices are a good idea but I am sure the bad guys will figure out a way to switch them off or something else to get around it.

It is good they are doing this but it must tie up several policeman for a while. In other places I think they're putting tracking devices in dummy parcels.

We have to sign when a parcel is delivered, I think it's the only safe way to go. So people immediately take inside the package.

There are a lot of people who do stupid things like this around the holidays. They might not have the money to buy something and want so badly for nobody to know this. So instead they go and take from others so they can give to another.

@JudyEv I guess not and you are so right. I sure hope they got back all that she stole and were able to find who they belonged to and were able to return them to the people they belonged to. It would be sad because these people might go after the company who shipped them and claim they were never shipped. Lucky they found this person so quickly and were able to stop this.
