No White Christmas for Australia

Vince set up this photo for his Facebook photo group friends and I thought it was a nice Christmassy picture. It features candles which we've had for some years and which some of you will have seen before. We left them too near the ceiling one very hot summer and they all drooped. But we kind of liked them and we've kept them. The candle holder was given to us by our boys for our 25th wedding anniversary so has special significance too. I hope this Christmas won't be as hot.

I saw the candles on your other discussion about the woman thief and was wondering what they were... I thought they were candy canes... But then I wondered why would you hang them out of a candle holder...

I forgot I had them on that post. I wrote about them on Bubblews and had that in mind. Cute, aren't they?

@enlightenedpsych2 It must indeed be very pretty. Hope it doesn't inconvenience you too much.

I imagined that the candles were bent because exposed to high heat. The same thing happened to our candles when we lived in the south of France.

@JudyEv Eight foot is pretty low, the heat goes up, I understand why the candles bent.

@LadyDuck Eight foot is the minimum. We have nine foot here and it is much better.

One house had a ceiling which was only 8 foot high. The candles were on top of a bookshelf and melted with the heat.

Those candles look really lovely like that, it makes a great photo. I don't think I'd like a hot Christmas, but I can do without a white one

We had a big roast dinner then plum pudding last night with some friends but on the big day it will be cold meats and salads - tiny bits of everything - except lots of watermelon!!

That is a very unusual candle holder with those candles in it and I am glad you have kept them as they look just fine.

You live in the southern hemisphere as I do. There are good and bad things about it. But I prefer to see snow in a post card than at my door step at this time of my life. The candles are lovely, I would keep them too.

For a white Christmas it is very cold and sometimes difficult to drive in the snow so I imagine that is why you don't think you would like to spend Christmas in a cold country. @JudyEv

@JudyEv I loved a white Chistmas I spent in the US when I was 13. Now, at 70, my bones donĀ“t like cold.

Of course for us Northern Hemisphere people it does seem so strange to have Christmas in the summer heat lol It is a very interesting picture.

@JudyEv Yes I can imagine it was a cultural shock for the ancestors who first came from the British Isles.

It's no wonder Australians eventually gave up the hot roasts and plum puddings in favour of cold meats, fruit salad and ice-cream.

I would think it would be neat to celebrate Christmas in the summer time as you do. I really hope to visit Australia sometime.

I initially read that as candies, not candles. Probably because I looked at the picture first.

There is no white Christmas here in Canada this year either it seems. Kind of sad that there won't be any snow for Christmas.

The candle holder is very elegant and the picture is nice! At first I thought they are candy canes. Though you won't be having White Christmas over there, hope it'll be a nice and not too warm Christmas.

@JudyEv Yes, it's quite warm here, but I think it's not as warm as Summer in Australia. My friends have been in Adelaide, Australia, and they told me it's extremely hot there.

My sister told me that Southern Ontario has no snow, no white Christmas. But she also mentioned that for the last two years there was mountains of snow to shovel [-- so she's not missing it!

I thought the candles were supposed to look like that, they look so much like candy canes in the picture. I can't imagine a hot Christmas, but I live in an area that is usually pretty cold this time of year. We had a brown Christmas last year and it just didn't seem like Christmas here. I don't think I would mind a green Christmas though.

We've always had Christmas In Australia so we don't know any other sort of Christmas. But while we were children most of the Christmas cards and wrapping paper showed snow, sleighs and pine trees.

at the candles. I had candles soften and get misshapen when I left them in the car in the summer.
