The year I discovered there was no santa

I believe I was 8 and my brother was 6 or so. Our Aunt and Uncle who raised us, would send us out to the car on Christmas Eve, as we were going to church for the Christmas Eve service. When we were sent to the car, they didn't come out to the car it seemed for awhile, and then all of a sudden, my brother said, that they we in the house putting the presents under the tree. I couldn't believe what he was saying, as I wanted to believe so bad, but it also made sense as to why they had sent us to the car, and didn't come out right away. Come to find out, my brother was right, and it sure spoiled my Christmas, but then it was better I found it out then, than later. When I look back on things, our Christmases were always great, no matter what, and finding out that santa really didn't exist, was just a small matter. It was the fact that we could spend it togehter. and enjoy oursleves anyway. I am thankful for the memories that I had with my brother, and my aunt and uncle, since they are all gone now. The memories will last forever, and I am thankful for that.

HaHa. That is funny. At least I had some years of belief, and you know, I am glad that I foound out when I did. I would have hated to go on believing a lie, as I don't like being lied to. I did enjoy my Christmases though, regardless, as they were with family, and that is the main thing. Now that I have grown up, have kids and grandkids, I think that Christmas is very special now. I get to spend it with my son and family, as we have great times toghether.

@garymarsh6 I am 67, and I satill get excited at Christmas. I think, my biggest enjoyment is being with my son and family for Christmas. It is better than being by myself. I enjoy the time we spend toghether more than the gifts that we give and receive.

@rosekiss Lovely and I hope they appreciate your company at Christmas. it is magical for children. I used to shake with excitement the only problem is I have never grown out of the shaking with excitement! How daft is that and I am 55 now!

Where did your brother get such a ridiculous idea from? Of course there is a Santa Claus.

HaHa, too funny. He knew that by us being sent out to the car, as when we went out to the car, there were no presents under the tree. He knew that they were puttng the presents under the tree, and I didn't want to believe it at 8 years old, but they finally did tell us then, that my brother was telling the truth. I am just glad that my brother lived with them as long as we did and had great times together whether it was Christmas or not.

I don't remember when I knew there was no Santa Claus. I think for me, it was a gradual thing of putting things together. I remember when I knew there was no Easter Bunny as I recognized my mother's writing on the Easter basket.

I am not sure about the Easter Bunny either, as I only remember about santa, that I found out he didn't exist. I never did resent my brother or my annt and uncle for not telling me. I am just glad I found out when I did, as it is better younger than older.

@simone10 I thought so too, but I never resented them for not telling us sooner. I guess you could say, it was a relief to finally find it out, and not hae to wait until we were older.

@rosekiss I think 8 is a little too young to find out there is no Santa but that's just how I feel.

It did seem funny to me, that my brother being younger, figured it out before I did. My aunt and uncle had been doing that for a long time sending us out to the car Christmas Eve. It just finally dawned on him as to why, and it was a little disappointing at first, but since our Christmases were so great, we just never let it bother us again, and enjoyed the good times we had growing up.

@Missmwngi Well, my aunt and uncle made it easy, as they made sure that our Christmases were always happy, and she made sure that we got what we needed and not always wanted, We may have thought at first, that we didn't always need what we got, but we certainly did, and were very appreaicative of everything that we got. It wasn't about the gifts anyway, as it was being with them that made it special, and now that I have kids, they are more important than anything else, even though I don't spend the holiday with my daughter as she lives in Missourit, and I am in Oregon. I still wish her the best on that day, and everyday.

When I found out my mother asked me and my sisters if we wanted to know who Santa is and my sister was like yeah I do. Well my mom says I am. We all looked at her in disbelief, and she goes I am Santa and have been all these years. I just couldnt believe it, I swear it ran through my mind over and over. Its sad I will have to some day tel my daughter there is no Santa, but for now I will enjoy the time and memeries with her.

It is hard to tell kids the truth, but if a child asks, then we do need to tell them the truth. My tenant has a 9 year oild daughter who just found out that there is no santa, and her mom had to admit that she is right. I think it was hard for her at first, but she si okay with it, and that makes her mom feel better. Since my ex and I are christians, we never did let our kids believe in something that isnt real, not because he isn't, but because we didn't want to have to lie to them, as we thought it would affect them later. Each family is different though, and that is what we chose to do, but those that don't I don't condemn them for it, as it is what they want to do.

I really didn't want to believe what he was telling me, but it all made sense. I am glad though that my aunt and uncle did finally tell us the trurth, as I would have hated to keep believing a lie. As far as my brother is concerned, I did have lots of love for him. He passed away a few years ago and I miss him, but I do have the memories to hold on to, and that is all that matters.

@saurabhrmp I have lost several family members over the years, but my memories of them are very vivd, and I will hang onto them forever. I also have lots of pictures, and are priceless, as they are the family members that are no longer here. I miss them all, but I know I wills see them again, on that great resurrection morning.

I wish I had realized it before I found out by my brother, but then it didn't affect me that long anyway. I enjoyed my Christmases regardless, and besides, he isnt what Christmas is about anyway. Jeus is the reason for the season, so I wanted to make sure that my own kids kenw that.

It's a shame that children have to be disillusioned, but it's part of growing up. I can't remember when I found out about Santa, so it obviously didn't bother me

It did me at first, but I got over it in a hurry. That isn't waht Christmas is about anyway, so I just deceded that I was glad tht I could spend my holiday with my family, as that is the most important thing, regardless of santa or not. Of course I now now, that Jesus is the reason for the season and he is the one I celebrate on Christmas.

There is santa (pretending) in the mall . . sitting and waiting for kids to sit on his lap for a Christmas photo. But the santa that puts those boxes of gifts under the Christmas tree is our moms or dads.

Yep, and that is what my brother, at the age of 6 figured out. I thought it was kind of funny, that I was older, and didn't catch on like he did. My brother told them he knew, and they admitted that he was right. It was disillusioning at first, but I got over it pretty fast. Now that I am grown up and have kids and grandkids, I am just happy that I can spend it with my son and family, as that is the most important thing, and of course Jesus is too, and not santa, who is make believe anyway.

Yes it is. I am just glad that we did have a few years of it anyway, and the rest of the time, we just enjoyed our Christmas knowing that our aunt and uncle had bought the gifts we asked for.

Isn't that funny though, that your cousin thought you better know, instead of finding it out yourself? That is the the way it goes with kids though, that they can't keep secrets to long, as they burst at the seams to tell others. At least when we do find out, we are okay with it, and enjoy our holiday with our families.

Yes, they do, but sometimes, it doesn't last as long as they might like, as they find out in one form or another, that he isn't real.

I don't think it is a very big deal for the most part. It bothered me a little bit, but not all that long as I had great Christmases then and after. Christmas isn't about Santa anyway, so I never worred about it after that.

I remember I was in grade three when I heard kids saying there was no Santa. I really wanted to believe. I asked my parents and they said I wouldn't get a gift from Santa f I didn't believe. So I BElieved! Any way soon enough they let me be part of the Santa fun by putting the gifts out and filling the stockings after my younger siblings went to bed. So my disappointment disappeared.

@paigea I still loved Christmas even though I found out there was no Santa, but like I said, that isn't want Christmas is about anyway. It is about sharing with others, enjoying each others compahy, just having a good time all around. That is what I like about Chrismtas, is spending it with the family, That is the main thing, is the family gathering.

If it weren't for my brother figuring it out, who knows how much longer I would have believed in him. I wasn't upset with my brother though, as he was telling the truth. I wished I could have believed a little longer, but it is better finding out real young than later. I can remember that Christmas Eve like it was yesterday. It is amazing how we can remember things from our childhood like this.

That is very young to find it out. Your cusin probably found out very young too. It is funny though that kids can be talking and the one will tell the other that there is no santa. Oh well, you know though, it doesn't detract from Christmas one bit. I didn't like it when I heard it, but then I told myself that I was going to have a great Christmas in spite of it, and I certainly did.
