Before Leaving The House

Do you leave the house empty and just lock the door or gate?
Do you hide the key under the doormat or among the plants?
Have you ever locked yourself out of the house? How did you get in?
Most houses in my neighborhood have fences and gates.
We have a doorbell, which passing school kids love to play with. Those who didn't look or don't know what it is holler or tap on the gate.
If we ever left the house empty, it's only for several hours; but if it's whole day, overnight, or several days, one of us will go home early, or we ask a relative to stay.
Sometimes there's only 3 of us here; me, my mother and another sibling. Although she is still mobile, alert and don't mind being left alone, if one of us has to step out, we coordinate so one of us stays with her.

yeah, i notice that for houses in other countries, you enter through the back, not the front door.

We do leave the house empty and lock the door and gate, and not leaving any keys in the house. As there are only four of us in the family, including two young children, either my husband goes out on his own, or all of us go out together. As we are staying away from our family, we usually go back to hometown to celebrate some festivals, especially Chinese New Year, so we might leave the house empty for days.
I think I have never locked myself out of the house as we are using the lock which the key must be slot in, hence I think there will be no chance for me to lock myself out.

We do have a secret place for that spare house key! And we have that now that I have locked myself out before. I was LUCKY in that I was able to break into the house via a low back window that I knew for a fact was slightly open (it was hard to close). But now it's fixed, so it'd be hard to break in now. Oh, and I lock up everything before I leave - no matter how quick my trip out will be.

good thing you fit in the window. i mean did you have to twist and fold yourself like a pretzel or slither like a snake?

I live alone, but I stay most of the time at my boyfriend's place. I do have a security system. I make it a point to lock my doors and windows, and activate the alarm whenever I leave my house for work or when I stay at the boyfriend's place. It gives us a sense of peace that if ever somebody tries to break in the authorities will be alerted. So far my alarm has not been tripped and hopefully that time will not come.

We have a key hidden. Most people in the US have a key hidden somewhere on their property. Atleast one person is always here, but most of the time two are here at one time. We don't have to worry about extended leaves from home as we don't go on vacation! haha.

we have dogs that ferociously bark when they sense or smell something different. But we lock our doors.

We hide a key in our barn. My son lives with us so even when we go camping he is here.

In the past I was at home almost 24/7 when I did not have a working vehicle. After getting a vehicle I am now away from home more often. Most of the time it is only during the day. If we are both away we will lock the doors and leave the tv on.

That must have been awful, I tend to stay home more often than not but when I don't have a working car I get worried.

I think we are fortunate to live in high rise apartments.
When you live at level 10 or 20, it is hard for anyone to look at the windows, and check if you are at home or not.
If we are going off for a week or more, and nobody is at home, we can ask the police to check out our house when they are patrolling the area.

I have a key to our apartment and my brother also has a key (we live together) and since we are always together when we go out, we are pretty much covered. I have been locked out before, many years ago, and I had to break a window to get inside.

i guess that means you had to make sure there were no jagged edges. i hope it was big enough and low enough. i guess you had to replace it immediately.

@simone10 it must have been frustrating. were they fixed within the day or did you have to cover it for a while?
good point about the locksmith.

So even if your mother leaves the house you don't like to leave the house empty for too long? Is there a problem with vandalism or breakins where you live, or do you never lock your doors at all?
We don't leave an extra key anywhere on the property, we used to leave one on a high shelf on the back porch when we first moved here, and the kids were younger, but now everyone has a key. I have left before and realized just after closing the locked door that my keys were inside. Sometimes I've been able to climb into a window, but mostly in the summer. Other times I make sure the windows are locked and then I hope that I don't forget my keys. Usually, I check to make sure they are in my pocket more than once before leaving for the day.
Our house is empty quite a bit as we all work different shifts.

our house is kind of exposed because it's on the corner and our fence is low. i don't want her to be alone, either, also because of her knees.

@hereandthere If people in our city have fences, they aren't usually in front of the house but in the back. Mostly to keep either kids or dogs in the yard, not necessarily to keep people out. Rarely do people gate their yards. We have doorbells on the outside of the front and back doors themselves rather than any gates. Most people keep their doors locked, although if we have family that need care, then we do make sure someone stays with them most times.
