Many years ago when my girls were still small we began a tradition in our little family of inviting folks who would otherwise be alone on Christmas Day to our Christmas dinner. I have always hated the idea of someone sitting home alone on Christmas Day. Plus, it was a good lesson in sharing and giving for my girls. As they grew up I was delighted to discover that they went out of their way to make sure that no one they knew would spend Christmas alone. Now that they are grown, they have the same tradition in their homes. It is a wonderful way to show you care and to brighten up a person's day who may have just sat at home being sad.

That's a lovely tradition, and I'm glad your daughters are carrying it on. Our home is also open to lonely people, but we only usually have the one. We don't know of any more.

@jaboUK I find that there are people where I work that are alone, plus neighbors. Sometimes we have a few and sometime just one or two.

I recall being alone in a strange city while studying at University and I was always grateful for the families who invited me into their homes at Christmas since I couldn't afford to go home.

@Freelanzer how wonderful that you were invited into someone's home during the holiday. It's so sad to be alone.

What a great way to really get into the true spirit of the season. We have a few additions every year beyond our immediate family and there is always room for more.

@BelleStarr that's exactly how I feel. We make sure there is always enough for more than we plan.

Such a wonderful thing to do and a great tradition to pass on to your kids. My parents always included everyone they knew to our Christmas Eve dinner and it was one of my best childhood memories. We always do the same thing as adults now.

@HazySue Yes, this is very true. If your children see you doing what you say, they will be more likely to do the same thing.

@simone10 it did create a lot of memorable Christmases. I wanted my girls to care about others. The best way to teach this was by example.

We've had people in to share our Christmas dinner several times. It's lovely that your daughters are carrying on the tradition.

That is what Christmas is all about - loving and sharing. You instilled a very good foundation in your children, I bet you are proud of them.
