The Best Online Writing Sites and the Worst Online Writing Sites

United States
December 21, 2015 10:38am CST
Over the course of the last several years there has been much flux with online writing sites. Some old sites collapsed, others merged together and others took a hiatus before coming back to life. Some new sites arrived on the scene that showed some staying power before bursting, others were snuffed out quickly, others adapted and continue to exist in some capacity In your experiences, which online writing sites did you consider the best and which ones did you consider the worst? If possible, please provide your reason(s). Please do not only mention myLot.

This is only my third site, after Helium and Bubblews, so I'm not well qualified to comment. That's never stopped me before though :) From a writing point of view, Helium was very good for me and some of my posts there made good money. Bubblews in its heyday was the most fun I've had doing what I do, although I saw that it was doomed to failure pretty early on. MyLot's design is probably the best of the three though - it's easy to find what you're looking for and the new users list allows us all to keep tabs on the future of the site. Admin is good here too.

@troyburns thanks for commenting. You are very qualified. Bubblews was indeed fun for some, but I was not one of those. I regularly pointed out the problems there so my posts and accounts got routinely deleted without explanation.

I have had 2 favorites over the years. One is MyLot and the other was called CGPGallery. CGP did not pay me though sadly what they owed before shutting down. MyLot is a trustworthy site which is why I love it so much.

Though at the end Bubblews didn't do it in a nice way and disappointed many people, I still think it used to be the best online writing site, at least for me. Not only the pay is huge, but I also like the way we participated there. I did learn a lot from that site and enjoyed my time there as well. Well, all these happened before a lot of spamming and cheating running around, then the site collapsed.... I can't say it's the worst too, though it did owe me lots of payment, it did pay me much more than other online sites as well.

@kaka135 the pay for some at first was huge, but others got stiffed while they paid the cheats. Their whole payment scheme there seemed phony.

@HanVanMeegerin Yes, actually I did not understand why after so long then only they realized their payment scheme was not right.

I have used 5 different writing sites: Scavengercash, Size of Paper, Persona Paper, Bubblews and myLot. I don't know if any of you remember Scavengercash and Size of Paper. Both sites disappeared several years ago, and I never got paid. I used Persona Paper for a while, but I never reached payout. Bubblews paid me many times, but I didn't receive all of my redemptions. I lost about $200 when they cancelled the redemptions in November 2014. I have been a member of myLot since 2008, and I consider it the best site. Conclusion: Worst: Scavengercash and Size of Paper Mixed feelings: Persona Paper and Bubblews Best: myLot

@innertalks When did you apply to Persona Paper? I joined PP in December 2014 and I got approved pretty fast, but the situation might be different now. When I left the owners were very busy offline, and I am not sure if they still approve or reject new members. I don't know Writeedge, but it doesn't sound like a site that I would like to join.

@Porcospino I applied two weeks ago. I did notice that they are not accepting writers from some countries (India and the Philippines), but now I have found mylot, I will stay here for now. Since 2008, you have been a member, that's a long time.

Persona paper?? I have applied to write here a while ago, but they never replied to my submission. Some sites are infiltrated with virus programs that try to get you to press on them, like for example bogus flash player buttons telling you that you need to update your flash player. Writeedge is one such writing site, that I got off, as soon as I noticed this

I started at Igougo, went on to be the Travel Channel Manager at Helium for 7 years, Associated Content which became Yahoo Voices, Bukisa when it paid, Bubblews, Persona Paper, Examiner for the last 3 years, Info Barrel, 5 blogs , Writedge and MyLot. Helium for me was overall the best paying but it was Igo that got me started as a travel writer. Worst, well CGP Gallery and Persona Paper and Bukisa..

@BelleStarr it sounds like you made the rounds on writing sites What do you think about Writedge and Examiner? Bukisa always seemed like a junk site. I am glad I didn't start there. Why do you rate PersonaPaper poorly? Though it wasn't perfect, I liked Associated Content.

My personal favourite was a travel site called Igougo.com which folded 2-3 years ago. It allowed us to write whatever we wanted and paid very well.

OMG I was on Igougo too for many years. I was Zabelle. I joined them in 2000, I was one of the original writers. I loved that site. We had get togethers and met staff at their New York office. Loved it. Igo was bought by Travelocity and it went downhill after that.

@Hatley I think they were crooked all along, but because they did pay some people some decent money, they built up momentum and it was easy for the site and members to say only violators didn't get paid. This was always BS, because while yes some violators didn't get paid, others did and some honest people got raked over the coals there.

The highest paying at this moment is postloop but it is hard to qualify and pass there.

I don't have one! Bubblews?! No way! Persona Paper . . it sucks. CGP Gallery was a gallery owned by thieves. I hope myLot will not disappoint us!

@antonbunot you mean when Bubblews was alive and paying some people high, which included numerous spammers, scammers, plagiarizers, copyright infringers and cheats from all walks of life. At the same time they chose not to pay some people that did nothing wrong. This second number kept increasing until all folks who did nothing wrong were not paid.

@antonbunot not even one good one? PersonaPaper tried for awhile. I read the posts of a few folks over there, but overall I'm not impressed. I'm glad that I never tried CGP Gallery. Bubblews was Bubblews and many people know what means.

@whiteream wikinut did have some advantages. I found posting there took a lot of work and the pay was poor. The owner/admin was absent, moderators were helpful and the star system was a joke.

I liked Bubblews in the beginning and wrote for them a lot. (Over 2000 genuine posts.) But with one change after another it just got worse. We chalk it up as experience and move on! :)

@HanVanMeegerin Yes, this is true and it was very apparent. That's why I left when I did (long before the final demise.) When they decided not to pay for three months. I got quite a few laughs though because some posts were so obviously not the work of the "writer". One in particular was a review of the latest in automotives and it was regarding a vehicle that was 6 years old. SMH.. :)

@Ponder243 thanks for sharing. I realize that they did pay some people and did pay some of those decent money, they also payed the scammers, spammers, plagiarizers, copyright infringers and other cheats, but stiffed some honest folks.

I started with Associated Content that was sold to YCN for a purported sum of $100 million - heady days of valuation indeed! I moved for a time with Bukisa and then stayed for years with Wikinut. I liked Associated Content, not Yahoo though, and also was comfortable with Wikinut. I am more comment driven, so I feel myLot will suit me just fine - siva

I joined mylot, bubblews, and wikinut. I preferred Bubblews layout, and now I am habituated to myLot layout as well. Wikinut didn't feel that good.

@vandana7 thanks for the comment. So far so good with myLot for me. I wish the bank moved faster. Bubblews seemed blatantly dishonest. Wikinut was okay. Too much work for too little money.

In my opinion , Bubblews would have been a very good site specially that it really made the bubblers earn a lot . What made it the worst though is not paying what is due to the bubblers .

i think that depends on what you look for in a site. If you are looking for fun this place if you are looking for really high earnings listverse if you want to write something with a lot more content then its probably personapaper

I started with Helium. They had contests, and also on-sold your articles on to magazines sometimes. Earnings there were good. They folded a year or two ago. I tried Triond, they paid me one payment of around $2, but then they seemed to die a bit, the number of views disappeared and so did the earnings. I was with Associated content too, who paid well initially, until they stopped paying people outside of the United States. Then I found Wikinut, who recently stopped paying their writers anything at all. They only paid very small amounts anyway. It was in British pounds though. I got around 14 pounds there in two years of writing for over 500 articles written. A paltry sum really. Helium had a great forum and community with it too. I was with it for eight years, and as I cut my teeth there as a writer, I value it the most. They had a system of rating where your articles were rated by everyone else on the site too, which was interesting.

I am new to mylot, but it looks like a fun site, most of the other sites I used to write on crashed and I would say burned, but in actual fact they kind of just faded away. The only other site that I like to write on is Hubpages. I am of course not counting my numerous blogs.
