Why are some songs evergreen?

Not so long ago, Shakira's Whenever Wherever was extremely popular.. So also Enrique Iglesias' Hero. I could hear such numbers quite often. I began to like them as well. Almost 8 years down the lane...I have no affinity for them at all. I can still enjoy some very old English numbers, but given a choice these two would not make it to the play list. Why do you think this happens? It is not only Western music. I feel even Indian music numbers are like that. Songs that were a rage at one point of time, are unbearable. But some songs that were not top of the list, remain in memory and are even hummed. Am I the only one who feels that way? May be that is why classical music is classical music. :)

There are old songs, even from the 60s, that I still love, even if they were not top of the list. The reason is that they bring back memories.

I disagree with that. Why do we like classical music then? We never heard that when we were young. At least I never heard western classical music ...till almost 20 years ago. That is pretty late in life to start fancying something so alien, and I love it. I became familiar with Zen music only 3 years ago, and I love it.

@vandana7 I have heard classical music since I was a toddler, because my father loved to listen to classic music, so I cannot really reply on this.

On the Indian songs aspect - Earlier, these songs had good (great) lyrics, the music came from real instruments and the vocalists were trained singers who had years of dedicated learning. Today, they all believe in "Anyone can sing" and also they realize that music will not last long just like the movies. No matter what they do, the lack of "Originality" - sounds are generated via computer programs, a synthesizer does produce all sounds - and the lyrics are almost always crap. On the Western Front, I am not sure, but I still am in love with "Baby I want you to Love me" from Lobo or even the earlier ones. When I mentioned a movie - Angels Sing, they told me that Willie Nelson is a singer. I found some great songs on YouTube. Kind of I love those type of songs. Just dont know what that genre is called.

Some songs are just timeless and they cross the barriers of time and even countries.
