There are several British Expats that shop at the store I work for. I no longer see them as I've switched departments, but when I was a cashier, I often was the one to ring their purchases through. I have a bad habit though. You see, I tend to mimic accents. I don't know why, but it's been something I've done for years and years. I guess you could say it's second nature. When speaking the little Spanish that I know, I affect that accent. I suppose that is why, when speaking to a person from an English speaking country (albeit with different accents) I tend to mimic.

I don't think it's offensive. One thing I will say is there is no such thing as a British accent as such as gb is made up of Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. All accents from those countries are very different and within those accents there is a lot of regional variation as there is in the us. For a small island we have a lot of different accents.

I meant it in a broad term. I don't know if dialect would be a better term for the different variations. Even within the Southern parts of the US, texans can sound very different from us in North Carolina. I guess it's all influenced by who settled where all those years ago.

Why would anyone be offended at that? They do say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Either way I imagine I sound interesting as I have a Southern Accent.

@jaboUK I think I'll keep hidden behind the computer for awhile yet. Some mylotters have actually heard my voice before though.

I did the same thing one time. I went down south to spend the summer with y BFF. Her mother has a very definite southern accent. I was listening to her and before I knew it I was using a southern accent like hers. I hope she didn't think I was being rude.

I am glad I am not the only one who has done something like this. I guess it's easy to slip into it by accident.

Some will find that cute and some will find that insulting, right?

If you mimic accents of people from other countries, say, India or Japan, that might be regarded as racism.

I would not even begin to know how to mimic to be honest. We had a skit show that featured a "chinese" woman and it was one of those shows designed to make fun of the accent.

Haha When I visited North Carolina someone asked me if I was German. I felt quite insulted.

I did this one in school when I was around 8 and we were sent to a British school. My mom was so much for us learning English but all we had done was attend French schools. So when my dad was stationed in England she thought it would be perfect to send us to the public school. My dad was against this one but she won out. I had no idea how to write or even read English. I could only speak English because of my mom. Well she is from the US and it is very different than in England. So when the teacher kept picking on me all the time to read and I had no idea how to read English she use to get all snotty with me and embarrassed me in front of the class. One time I got mad and started to mimic her and talk like her. I really did talk back to her and was sent out of class. My dad showed up because he was called. When we were talking to the head master I think it was he told my dad what I had done. I started to talk to my dad in French and tell him how awful this school was and how I refused to stay there. In the end I was taken out of this school and put back into a French school and I was so much happier than being there with that horrible teacher I had.
