On our recent holday we visited a karaoke bar several times. For those of you who have never been to one of these, they are places where anyone can get up and sing whatever they like. The words come up on a screen for the singer to follow, and the audience can see them as well. Someone decided to sing Neil Diamond's song, which I had always thought was called 'The Reverend Blue Jeans'. Imagine my surprise upon seeing the words come up on the screen as 'Forever in Blue Jeans'! Another one I found that I had got wrong was a line in Boney M's 'Rivers of Babylon'. I thought they sang 'How shall we sing the lord's song in Australia', but found that it was 'How shall we sing the lord's song in a strange land'. Not even very close! Have you ever mistaken the words of a song?

I mistake the words in songs all the time and purposely sing them wrong just to get rise out of my grandchildren

These are known as mondegreens, and I think we all do it. My oldest boy used to sing "Olaf's farm it is to ride on a one-horse open sleigh" and my daughter thought "the dreams of ordinary men" was "the dreams of all the married men".

Well, some might say that Australia is a strange land, so you might not be too far off.

@jaboUK It's been very warm in these parts, the computer makes too much heat and too much noise, and I have been doing very little. I can never think of anything to say. I guess I wasn't feeling it. Decided to pop in today and read a bit, still have nothing to say, though.

@Rollo1 Well I've seen you commenting on a few discussions, so you are managing to say something. It's not necessary to post yourself, is it? It's actually been really warm where you are? I can remember all that snow you got last year and how long it hung about, so it's got to be better than that?

For years I could never understand why Credence had the words, "there's a bathroom on the right," in their song "Bad Moon Rising." The champion of misunderstood lyrics has to be my mom.

Funny! There's a misheard line in Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", about a devil in a sideboard... Jasper Carrott, a British comedian, used to use some of these misheard lines in his comedy routine, I wonder if any of it is on YouTube?

@jaboUK Someone put a link for a song, familiar from the 60s or 70s from the other site, that song was about lightning, I didn't know that it had anything to do with storms. The words I heard were There's a bat room on the right. Those words aren't in the song.

Too many times @jaboUK , and one seemed quite rude, so I could not understand why it would be included in a song, until I saw the lyrics, and light bulb moment...realised I had heard wrong :-D. I shall not elaborate on that one though.

There are more than a few songs where the words you hear seem different that the words on paper. I also wonder if the singers know that and deliberately distort the words. I knew Rivers of Babylon mentioned Australia.

@PainsOnSlate Oh yes, there was this bar on the way back from the beach where they had karaoke from 2pm to 2am. We would often stop there, it was such fun. The good singers were a pleasure to listen to, and the bad ones were funny
