Bath or Shower - if you can have only one, what's it to be?

My sister just had her bathroom 'done' and has taken out the bathtub and replaced it with a shower cubicle. She has a small old two bedroom house with just the one bathroom which might well have been built as a three bedroom in the days before indoor bathrooms. The family are quite 'split' about whether replacing the bath with a shower was the right thing to do and I wondered what other people think. I'm sure a lot depends on where you live and how the weather is. Most people in hotter countries would probably favour a shower. Those in colder ones may well prefer a good hot soak in the tub. Those in countries where water is scarce may well be shouting 'shower' at their screens whist those in countries where it never stops raining may favour a bathtub. My parents are pro-shower for themselves, being of an age where getting in and out of a tub is a challenge. Even so, they think she should have kept the bath on the grounds that nobody with mobility issues would ever want to buy my sister's house with its narrow, steep staircase. I love few things more than a long soak in the bath and my position is that taking out the bathtub means she'll never be able to sell to a family with small children. My parents say only an idiot with small kids would buy my sister's house because of the stairs (again). My husband prefers a shower and thinks they did the right thing. So I have two questions. What would you do and do you think my sister did the right thing? (Please let me know where you live)

I live in Canada and I think it is much smarter to have a bathtub with the shower included in it.

I'm a shower person. As soon as I had a choice, that's what it's been. It's her choice for the shower, however, from a seller's standpoint, a tub is best with shower capability.

I'd favour the combo approach. Their problem is that the ceiling wasn't high enough for a shower over tub system.

@just4him You make an interesting point. In the USA, most baths have their base at floor level whilst in the UK, most bath bases are a good few inches above the floor so you need a higher ceiling to fit the shower in.

@boiboing Then a tub would be the best option - from a seller's point of view. It's strange that a shower wouldn't work with a tub, and yet it works as a stand alone. Seems to me it would work both ways.

I definitely prefer a shower. This house and the last I lived in have unused baths! I've just dropped by to say Happy New Year to a few friends, so your predictions that I would be back were right. It's only a short visit for now.

In Switzerland you will never sell a house without a bath. We have both in our house, I use the bath in winter and the shower in summer.

I could count on one hand how many baths I've taken in the last 20 years....I am not a fan of sitting in a tub full of hot dirty water. ... and I don't do hot tubs either. Tennessee.

@boiboing Yes, we're two hours from Dollywood. No matter where I live/lived it's always showers.

@boiboing Actually rural Tennessee when Dolly was growing many in the hills did not have indoor baths and either use an large old tub in winter and the creek in sunner.

Unfortunately it wasn't an option because of the low ceiling in their bathroom.

Funnily enough I had our bath taken out of the main bathroom and had a double shower put in it but moved the bath to the other bathroom. I prefer a shower but for aches and pains it is nice at times to lie in a hot bath albeit falling asleep in it. The problem being as you get out of the bath the aches and pains gradually creep back. You know where I live!

@boiboing LOL You can get walk in baths.although I don't fancy those as you fill it once you are inside the bath. I can not think of anything worse than that!

I live in central Texas @boiboing . As a kid growing up, we 6 kids had to take a bath in a round washtub which sucked because the water only got changed after 3 kids took the bath; so in essence, unless you were the 1st kid each time, you got the dirty water of the first 2 kids. So for me? S-H-O-W-E-R.

i live in arizona but that has nothing to do with my preferences . i love both. but these days i have to make it a shower because of issues with in and out of the tub. so i have to put a shower chair inside the combination tub/shower.

I'm still at an age where it's hard to believe that baths will become a problem but I have enough people around me to remind me that it can become an all too serious issue.

I'm with you on the bathtub, why stand up when you can lay down and soak in all those lovely suds....besides when I get really cold, a bath is the only thing that reheats the body for me, the hubby likes both, so alternates. But having dealt in property,... removing a bath is a Big no-no, if you ever want to sell, in the UK a shower may be an essential to some, but is also regarded as an 'add-on', so bad move!!

Shower. Georgia. As long as I can get a long hot shower I don't miss taking baths but otherwise a large tub filled to the brim is okay.

I've been in Atlanta in August so I know it's a 'three showers a day' state in summer.

Yes, I think people should do what's right for them if they plan to stay in a house for a long time.
