Chrome to the Rescue

I put coffee on to brew and sat at my desk. I pushed the little power button on the PC tower and waited. Then I waited some more. I can't say how long because I was still asleep. However, at some point, I realized that nothing was happening. No little green lights appearing, monitor screen still blank. A flurry of unplugging and replugging then ensued. There was no response. My computer had died from unknown causes. Figures. Just when I was ready to return to myLot, my computer dies. There was only one thing to do. I stole into the bedroom of my sleeping son and stole his laptop. And this is where Chrome came to the rescue. Sometimes I resent Google's intrusive tracking of everything I do, but when you have to sign in on a strange computer it comes in handy. Sign into Google and all of your familiar sights are there. All your bookmarks and all your idiosyncrasies are synced through your account. Of course, this is still taking an age and a half to type because I cannot type on laptops. It is so bad, that I am tempted to speak a post to the tablet, but some of the things that the tablet thinks it hears and puts down in text would definitely violate myLot guidelines. Still, none of this would be possible without Google's nosy nature. Thank you, Chrome.

Now I'm curious. What is it about laptops that makes it hard for you to type?

I am ergonomically incorrect.

@ElizabethWallace I have to keep track of the length of my arms, and make sure my wrists are firmly planted in the position most likely to cause carpal tunnel. If I don't keep my wrists and forearms on the desk, my fingers go a-wandering and I can't find them. They are prone to misbehave.

@Rollo1 Ah. Ok. I have to keep track of the length of my fingernails, or I cannot type on anything.

Glad you were able to log in on your sons computer. I know on my first laptop I had to plug in a mouse because I couldn't use the one on the computer, just couldn't get the hang of it but in time I mastered that dang thing.

So not all cookies or tracking is a bad thing. Nice to hear. Maybe that was the idea all along. Sorry your computer went kerput. Guess you tried plugging in a lamp or something just to verify the plug works. I only had one do that the fan didn't go around it and had to replace the power supply but got a used one so stayed happy.

I've had the power supply go on a tower before and replaced it. Usually there's some kind of warning or at least it tries to come on. I don't have another one that will fit this tower, so if I can come across one that will be worth it to try it out. In the meantime, I need to find one of the older computers that still boots up

@Rollo1 It's a little of a put off when the power light won't even come on. Good when you are sure where the problem is exactly.

I have gone from IE to FF to Chrome - then to Opera and some other one - I like Chrome the best.

I only use IE when downloading from nMicrosoft because they often require it. I Have FF and Opera for specific sites but Chrome is my general browser for most things.

@AbbyGreenhill the most useful aspect of Internet Explorer is that you can use it to download other browsers to your computer.

I'm glad that you were at least able to go to myLot. I remember the first time I ever tried to use a laptop and I hated it. It seemed like the keys on the keyboard were different than my PC. I even bought a laptop once and ended up giving it to my daughter because I hated it. Then a year later, I decided to give it another try as my PC was getting slower and slower. It took some time but I was able to type on and haven't looked back since. I love my laptop.

You have just reminded me about the keyboard as it did seem different from what I was used to. @simone10

@Rollo1 You can plug in a mouse and use that until you can master the touchpad on your laptop.

I absolutely hate the laptop keyboard. I have far too many fingers and they're far too fat. & I keep hitting the touchpad. I have a terrible time with a regular keyboard, I don't know if I can ever get use to a laptop.

I don't care for lap tops either. When on the rare occasion I use a lap top I put a mouse on it, I hate all that swiping to get things to move.

@Rollo1 I hear you, it's all strange especially if you're not used to it. I'm happy with my desk top, my husband bought me a lap top once I told him thanks but never again.

It sure feels like crap when you use another device for the first time after your beloved computer goes into coma. I hope you have taken steps to repair it. What went wrong, did you find out?

I'm using Chris's laptop while I'm up here. I had sent myself an email address that I thought I would need thinking that his computer wouldn't have the email address stored, but I found out it did!!

This was an interesting turn of events!! Chrome has been the subject of wrath of people due to its nasty tracking feature and here it seems like an angel in disguise!! :-D Nice to know it helped you
