Yesterday, we finally found a way to make use of our Aloe plant. My boyfriend burned his hand while he was getting something out of the oven. It wasn't a serious burn that needed medical attention. However, it was red, swollen, and painful.
So, we broke off a piece of our Aloe plant and squeezed the gel-like substance out of the plant onto the burn. My boyfriend felt immediate relief.
I think it's amazing how nature can provide things like this for us.

Thanks for the info. Always used to use ice as the first measure to give relief to the burnt area.

@Angelee_27 I searched yahoo for the answer to be sure if aloe vera is also toxic to cats. Unfortunately the answer is a big YES. It is toxic to dogs and toxic to cats. The clinical signs are vomiting, diarrhea, depression, anorexia, tremors and change in urine color. According to APSCA if your pet ingested this plant contact your veterinarian or the APSCA Animal Poison Control Center.

@mammots Would you happen to know if Aloe is toxic to cats as well? We have a cat and she keeps jumping up on the coffee table and nibbling on our plant.
I would hate for her to get sick!

It is also good for the hair. This may sound weird, but I usually add the gell like substance in side an aloe leaf in my smoothies. It doesn't affect the flavor and it adds additional nutrition.

@CaptAlbertWhisker I have never heard of ingesting the gel-like substance found in Aloe plants. Are you sure it's safe?

Yeah is sure is an amazing plant. Hope the burn is better. For burns pull hand under cold water or use a cold compression to take the heat out of the burn.

Aloe is amazing. Unfortunately, my sister is allergic to it and she gets a lot of skin irritations.
