A lot of CenturyLink's modems also have built-in wireless routers. If you got it directly from CenturyLink, the paperwork should have instructions for setting up the wireless access if it has that feature. You can also look at the label on the modem; the default SSID and access password for it will be printed directly on that label if it has wireless access.
If you don't have wireless access, you'll either need to get a wireless router or an Ethernet cable that's long enough to connect your modem to your computer. I'd go for the router for convenience; they start at about $50 for a basic model. Depending on how long of an Ethernet cable you need, you'll probably end up spending about $30-$50 on it.
Another option is to take a look at the other rooms in the apartment. Most of the ones I've lived in have had multiple phone jacks throughout them, so if you have another one available you can try plugging it into that jack and see if it's connected to your active DSL/phone line. Since your modem's already set up, you'll just have to plug it in at the other jack. It'll connect automatically as long as the line is active there.

On a router you will need to see if the cable they use is a pass through cable or a crossed cable. There is two different type of cables to get your connection across. Normally a router uses a crossed cable to get the signal to your computer. If you happened to buy a pass through cable this one won't work. Pass through cable will work if you hook up one computer to another so you can transfer data through the RJ45 cable. I would check to see what you have bought. Or do as Yuki suggest and get a wireless card and use the wireless signal to get to your computer.

@lababe1 It should say on the package. OK here is how you can tell. A simple way. Take both ends of the cable and put the two RJ45 ends together so you can see the color. Now look at the color and see if they line up or they are opposite. If they line up when put together this is a router crossed cable. If they don't line up and the colors are wrong then this is a pas through cable for computers. On the package it should say crossed or pass through normally. When doing this make sure the clips for the cable are on the same side. Do not have one clip down and the other up. Keep them the same when you look.

I think you can go for wifi and contact your service provider for wifi connection and then after that you don't need that any more cables in your house for internet.
