LoriAMoore has written about seven of her childhood memories and asked us to do the same. I had a job paring it down to 7, but here are mine. 1. My parents didn't possess a car when I was a child, but they had a tandem bicycle with a sidecar attached. Dad rode on the front of the bike, Mum at the back and we three little girls would pile into the sidecar. This was really just a crate on wheels, but we thought it was wonderful. We'd explore the local countryside like that. 2. Rolling down the grassy hill at the back of my grandparents' home. 3. Sliding frogspawn through my fingers in the local brook, and later being delighted when tadpoles emerged. 4. Making a 'slide' on the canal when it froze over in the winter. It's a wonder we never fell through and drowned. 5. Helping my mother on washday by attempting to turn the mangle. 6. I remember the hissing and sputting of the gas lamps in my grandparents home. They didn't have electricity. 7. Picking wild flowers for my mother - bluebells, primroses and cowslips in the Spring, buttercups, daisies and dandelions in the summer. She never told me that dandelions were weeds, but accepted them all graciously. Are you going to tell us some of your memories?

Playing "house" with other kids when I was a kid! . . I was always the father and the prettiest girl was the mother. All the rest were our children. Obviously, I started early . . that is why I also married early at age 21!

but it was nice to marry young because your children grow up like you and them are siblings, right?

@ridingbet I didn't marry young, but am best friends with my children, though I don't think of them as siblings.

We share three of these experiences. I remember picking wild blackberries - Is this something you did when you were young?

@troyburns Oh yes - I remember getting my arms and legs scratched while reaching for those little beauties. We also picked wild strawberries - sweet tiny little things. You going to do one of these posts? Please do.

I can remember rolling down grassy hills too, do kids even do that today? You've got some wonderful memories.

@jaboUK I know, they are missing out. I just took a stroll down memory lane and did up a discussion. Most of mine based on the scent of smell, the smell of fresh apples, bales of hay, even the smell of the great outdoors while hoeing a bean field.

@Juliaacv I remember us doing a similar post on Bubbs - I think you started it there. Kids are missing out if they don't know the pleasure of rolling downhill.

I loved this post Janet, and can relate to everything but the tandem. I wish my old dad's bike had been a tandem and had a side car. Like you I loved the frogspawn and the resulting tadpoles.

@maggs224 I think the tandem was pretty unique - my parents had it when they were courting, and then added the sidecar when we came along. It didn't have any seats or anything - we just sat on a blanket.

Those are all wonderful memories. I loved the tandem bike. What fun that must have been, and the slide on the canal. I agree, the things we did in our childhoods makes even me wonder how I'm still walking God's earth.

We did not have health and safety in the old days. We had neighbours saying they would tell my Mum if I did it again. Or we got a bloody knee and grass stained pants.

@jaboUK - That's an interesting one. If I was to ask Dom about the special things he likes doing, I doubt whether more than one or two would be about "screen time". I hope he remembers the times we spent reading scary stories together.

Thanks @nanette64 for bringing me here. @jaboUK - it is good reading all the memories that you have shared with us here. I never have had any access to frozen things (as in frozen canal) as we always have been in the hotter parts - someday, if possible, I would love to go out and see some snow or even the ice caps. I loved reading #7 wherein you got flowers for your mom. That must have been a very loving moment for both of you. ps: I will post mine soon (maybe tomorrow).

@thesids It seems strange to realise that some people have never experienced ice and snow - perhaps you will one day. We didn't have any money as children so used to roam the fields and hedgerows for the wild flowers. I look forward to reading yours, as I suggested you did your own, on Nanette's post.

I can't remember much from that time, but do remember climbing trees, laying in the grass watching the clouds and picking flowers for my mom. We didn't have a TV until I was 15, so had to do all the outdoorsy things

These are lovely and precious memories! I always like to read or listen to these childhood memories, especially those simple and fun ones! My husband always said I do not really have "childhood time", as I didn't get to play as much for a kid, my parents always wanted us to study. I guess this is why I am always happy to read those wonderful childhood memories, I always feel happy while reading them. But, I am sure I can think of some memories, I was still a happy child when I was young, it's just that I didn't get to explore or play as much.

@jaboUK It is a shame but kids these days will never know real freedom. There were weird people about then but you knew who they were and stayed away from them. These days with so many people it is impossible to know who they are. It is best to keep the kids in sight or go out with them.

I'll consider it, after I read what Lori wrote and after I come back from doing a small window job. I talked my husband into helping as I'm not having a worker come into town just for half an hour. We do a pizza place every other week and when we don't the inside gets too filmy from the heat of the ovens I imagine, so I do at least the inside on time. Not sure whether I'll be doing the outside too, but if I do it's money in the pocket. I have three days off, so I'll be around here and there sometime. I decided to edit this post to include the tags others are using to help us find more of them.

@jaboUK Since it was such a small job, I figured he'd be fine and he was. It didn't take us long at all. If the snow wasn't shoveled around the store, it would have been more difficult, but he's got a new prosthetic on order and he's hoping to be able to help out more this next year. He's been back to the retail store since Labor Day/ september, but not working a full schedule as yet.

How adorable and such sweet childhood memories. I love the bicycle and how it reminded me of my grandma telling me she went from NY to CA in a motorcycle with a side car and two small babies only 13 months apart and both still in diapers. They camped their way across the states.
