Grilled Cheese Isn't Rocket Science

This afternoon I decided to make myself a grilled cheese sandwich (with swiss cheese cause that's my favorite).
I don't have any kind of new fangled gadget to make grilled cheese and I just do it in my frying pan.
Side one came out all nice and golden brown.
I flipped it over...
Side two I burned.
This happens to me almost all the time. One side comes out perfectly and the other almost black.
Grrrr with all the times I've made grilled cheese you would think I would be able to do it with my eyes closed. Obviously I can't even do it right with my eyes open.

@Marilynda1225 What, never? I toast the bread first then put the cheese on and wait for it to bubble up under the grill - lovely.

Happens to me too, so now I cook them super slow and they are always perfect.

@fishtiger58 I guess maybe I have my pan too hot and too high so next time I'll have to make sure I cook it a little slower

@Marilynda1225 yup low heat and slow is the key. I have learned over the years.

I sometimes cook mine in a skillet but other times use the broil on my oven. It seems like when I cook it in a skillet, one side is always a little browner too. I don't know if it's because the skillet is really hot by the time we get to browning the other side.

@Marilynda1225 I usually have to turn the heat down a little to keep it from burning.

@simone10 you are probably right about the skillet being hotter by the time you flip the grilled cheese. duh I never thought of that

@gr8nana I think I get distracted once I flip it over and my mind wanders. Guess I'll have to pay closer attention on my next attempt

@jillybean1222 I think the gadget I was thinking about is a panini maker but I couldn't think of it when I wrote the post

Once in a blue moon I make a grilled cheese for my husband, I can't eat cheese so just cooking with it I have to put on a brave face!

A grilled cheese sandwich actually sounds pretty good right now. I think I'll make some with some of my leftover Christmas ham!

My mom has something to do some grilled cheese. I usually do it in a pan. At least you know how to make grilled cheese. I had a roommate in university who asked my husband how to make one. She had no clue how to make some of the simplest things. Oh well ...

That's me with making pancakes. Always has been. I'm cursed, and I feel my adult children are traumatized by a childhood of half-burned pancakes :)
